LITTLE FREE LIBRARY IN ROLLING HILLS!

In my travels over the years driving through various neighborhoods, I would see Little Free Library boxes and I had a dream to bring that idea to Rolling Hills!

With the assistance of Elaine Jeng, former Rolling Hills City Manager, we worked together to bring the idea to fruition.  She escorted me through the process of going before the City Council and after a couple of meetings the funding was approved. This was an easy peasy process, thanks to the City Council members.

Elaine and I thought the best box choice would be one that reflected the equine ambiance of the Rolling Hills Community…thus we picked a box that looks like a barn! The box is made by the Amish community and is composite material so it will hold up to the weather elements. Additionally, by purchasing directly from the organization it automatically registered the box as an “official” Little Free Library. An added bonus is that a portion of the purchase goes towards books for underserved children.

The Little Free Library can also be included on a national map with locations of other boxes, but since we are a private community, we chose not to be part of the map.
Upon Elaine’s departure from Rolling Hills, Stephanie Grant, Assistant Planner with the City, was supportive and instrumental in completing the last “chapter” of the loaning library project. In collaboration with the Rolling Hills Community Association, Artie Beckler and Sylvester Jimenez installed the library box at the corner area of the pathways between the City Hall and Association buildings.

The box is filled with a selection of children’s books, books for adults, as well as magazines. You can sit and read under the shade of the nearby trees or take something home…and if you feel inclined, you can bring something to put in the box for somebody else to enjoy! The box is for all of the Rolling Hills Community.
And for me, a dream come true!
