Cowboy Days!

The Palos Verdes Peninsula has a rich history of equestrian activities. In the early 1900’s Frank Vanderlip Sr. envisioned a development of large single family dude ranches comprising what would eventually become the city of Rolling Hills. To serve these new residents and promote western riding traditions, the Empty Saddle Club was established in 1935 as a riding club and stables just north of the development.

In 1951 another club, Caballeros del Rancho Palos Verdes, was formed to develop and protect trails throughout the community. With continued support from the City of Rolling Hills and Rolling Hills Community Association, 26 miles of graded trails and two riding arenas are carefully maintained for the enjoyment of all Rolling Hills residents. Caballeros hosts several community events throughout the year from pancake breakfasts to rides and the annual Hix BBQ.

Empty Saddle Club also continues to serve local equestrians, many of whom are Rolling Hills residents, nearly 90 years later. Although it is a private club they host several community events throughout the year. Most notably their annual Cowboy Days celebration includes western horsemanship competitions with live music, food and fun for the whole family. Cowboy Days will be held this year from September 20th through 22nd at 39 Empty Saddle Road. All members of the community are invited to come by and celebrate the preservation of our western heritage on the Peninsula.
