SUGAR & STILETTOS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION

During the twenty-two years I’ve co-owned Malibu Kitchen retail food establishment, I found it personally gratifying to balance out work life with endeavors of giving back and supporting various charitable organizations in any way I can. My previous Stroll Rolling Hills “Making A Difference" articles have covered the Palos Verdes Land Conservancy, Homeless Not Toothless, Music Mends Minds, Save A Warrior, The Grammy Foundation‘s MusiCares -- as well as supporting the South Coast Botanic Gardens and my place of worship, to mention a few.

Another organization that I support is SUGAR & STILETTOS CHARITABLE FOUNDATION, which was founded by my long-time friend; actress, comedian, and playwright, Nanci Christopher. She began her organization in her front yard in West L.A. and over the past 10 years it has blossomed into a neighborhood event.  Malibu Kitchen has annually donated baked goods to be sold at the event as well as a Malibu Kitchen’s baker giving instructional pie making. Along with additional establishments of crafts, and silent and live auction items, the pièce de resistance of the event is the crowning of Mr. Sugar & Stilettos. Yes! Each year, a well-known male celebrity -- including Richard Lewis, Steven Weber, Bradley Whitford, Greg Germann, Peter Mackenzie and Kurt Fuller to name a few -- puts on a pair of stilettos, a beauty queen sash and tops it off with a tiara! The crowning ceremony is an absolute hoot!

The Westside Food Bank in Santa Monica is the sole beneficiary of all the funds that Sugar & Stilettos Charitable Foundation raises. Miraculously, the WSFB can turn $1.00 into 4 nutritious meals.

The Westside Food Bank (wsfb.org) is an independent, non-governmental, 501(3)c non-profit corporation founded in 1981, which provides food to social service agencies on the west side of Los Angeles County. Westside Food Bank's mission is to distribute as much nutritious food as possible to local food assistance charities and to reduce food waste on the west side. The food often enables low-income people to stay in their homes, deterring the problem of homelessness, because it saves them from having to make the agonizing choice between paying for rent or food when they can't afford both. Receiving the food also enables the 50 member agencies to devote more of their own resources to other ways of helping clients achieve self-respect and economic independence.

Sugar & Stilettos Charitable Foundation celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2022...much delayed due to the pandemic. In place of holding the bake sale extravaganza and crowning ceremony, they now support the Westside Food Bank by raising money for them during their Annual Hunger Walk in mid-October. This past year they were able to donate almost $20,000...providing almost 80,000 meals! Their partnership with Ralph Lauren Beverly Hills contributed $11,000 of that total.

Look for more news about the 2023 WSFB Annual Hunger Walk closer to the mid-October event. There will be many opportunities to participate in the walk itself as well as donate funds -- which is so meaningful and appreciated.
