Golf Suits Mitchell Hoey To a Tee!
Practice Makes Perfect for this Athlete

“No matter how good you are, you can always get better, and that’s the exciting part.” – Tiger Woods
"I've only played golf since high school," says Mitchell Hoey. But judging from his skills, you might never guess. Not only has he golfed all over the country, but Mitchell has played in high-level AJGA tournaments spanning the West Coast to the East Coast.
“This travel has only increased since I began playing college golf, as my team and I are constantly on the road, going to a new state every other week for another tournament,” he says. It’s clear he thrives on the challenge and excitement that comes with playing on a national scale.
Interestingly, Mitchell's introduction to golf came through a key mentor—his idol, Cody Blick. “Initially, I got into golf because my idol Cody Blick took me under his wing and showed me the ropes,” he shares. He’s been playing ever since.
Favorite Courses
When it comes to his favorite courses, Mitchell doesn’t hesitate. "My favorite courses that I played are Cherry Hills Country Club and Colorado Golf Club for the 2023 US Amateur," he says. “Both courses were immaculate in terms of conditions, but as the premier USGA event in the world, what stood out to me the most was the hospitality from the USGA, as it made me feel extremely honored and welcomed to compete in such a prestigious championship.” The courses were beautiful, yes, but it was the experience of playing alongside great players and the exceptional hospitality that made this event stand out for Mitchell.
For Mitchell, however, it’s not just about competing on the big stage. Roundhill Country Club holds a special place in his heart. That’s where he grew up. “It is a challenging course with many demanding tee shots and small greens that emphasize strategic iron play. It truly shaped me into the player I am today and influences how I approach the game.”
Mitchell is also open about the areas where he’s working to improve. "In terms of weaknesses, the area that has struggled is ball striking,” he admits. “However, because I pride myself on being a good driver and putter of the golf ball, it balances out. I know that if I can be one of the best drivers and putters of the golf ball, then I can compete against anybody. Still, there is some work to do to get my ball striking back on track."
Connections + Camaraderie
Some of his most memorable moments come from the simpler times spent at Roundhill with friends. "It's nothing crazy, but some of my favorite memories involve playing rounds in the summer with my group of friends late into the evening," Mitchell recalls. "Additionally, I love sitting on the upper putting green and practicing for hours on end. My friends and I often played putting games and short game challenges, constantly testing each other, which is something I'll always remember."
The Dream Team
If given the chance to play in a dream foursome, Mitchell knows exactly who he’d want at his side. “If I had to choose three others, I would say I want to play with two of the greats: Tiger, for starters, and Jack Nicklaus (in his prime) as my second choice,” he says. “Lastly, I'd choose my Dad to join us because I owe him for getting me into the game of golf.”
Final Thoughts
Looking to get started golfing? Mitchell has some words of wisdom.
“One round doesn’t define you,” he says. For those new to golf, make sure it’s something you enjoy. “While you may face frustration, your mindset and approach to golf will determine your future in the game.”
Golf is a sport that people can do at any age. From high school to college golf, and from local courses to national championships, Mitchell’s path shows no sign of slowing down.
