Lisa Cobler Was the Women’s Club Champion An Astonishing 13 Times

Living Proof that Practice Makes Perfect!

“Practice, practice, practice.” Lisa Cobler didn’t just say it—she owned it, grinding away on the Ruby Hill driving range like a champion on a mission. It’s no surprise that Lisa was crowned the Women’s Club Champion an astonishing 13 times, a feat as remarkable as the woman behind it.

This month, we celebrate Lisa as our Golfer of the Month, and more than that—we honor her enduring legacy. Lisa passed away peacefully in November after a courageous five-year battle with breast cancer, but her presence continues to be felt across every fairway and green of Ruby Hill.

Lisa’s love for the game began early. Raised in a golf-loving family in Los Gatos, she picked up a club at the age of 9 and never looked back. She dazzled in junior tournaments across California, winning more than 30 Junior Golf Association of Northern California titles. By 16, she’d made history as the youngest champion of the Women’s Golf Association of Northern California. And by 18, she was competing on the national stage, reaching the quarterfinals of the prestigious Women’s Western and Trans National tournaments.

At San Jose State, Lisa helped lead the women’s golf team to a top national ranking and played a pivotal role in launching what would become one of the most respected collegiate programs in the country. Her talent earned her a spot in the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am, where she stood out not just for her skill, but for her grace and charm.

Her professional career took her abroad, playing on both the European and Asian tours, where she was especially beloved in Japan—not just as a golfer, but as a model and brand ambassador.

Despite her world travels and competitive career, Lisa found her greatest joy back home. After marrying Michael Cobler and settling in Pleasanton, she eventually returned to amateur status to enjoy golf on her own terms—sharing it with family, friends, and her beloved Ruby Hill community.

Even as she fought her toughest battle, Lisa never lost her competitive spirit or warm-hearted presence. She continued to play, inspire, and lead by example. Her victories on the course were impressive, but it’s her kindness, mentorship, and unwavering positivity that left the deepest impact.

In a moving ceremony this April, the Ruby Hill Women’s Golf Club dedicated a bench on the driving range in Lisa’s memory. Directly located under a shady tree, it’s the perfect spot to reflect, to swing, and to soak in the spirit of a woman who believed in always showing up and giving your best. Family, friends, and fellow golfers gathered to share stories, shed tears, and celebrate a life well-lived. Julie Wente, Lisa’s dear friend, spoke from the heart, joined by Head Pro Nigel, Jan Soderstrom, and Lisa’s family.

Lisa’s light lives on in every young golfer she inspired, in every woman she encouraged, and in every perfect swing taken on that range.

Here's to Lisa Cobler—champion, trailblazer, and forever part of the heart of Ruby Hill.
