Ryan Sharpe: From Local Kid to Golf Champ
Lifelong Sedgefield Resident Shares His Journey on the Greens
Stroll through Sedgefield, and you’ll likely find Ryan Sharpe enjoying one of his favorite pastimes—golfing, fishing, or taking a relaxing evening golf cart ride with his wife, Rebecca. A lifelong resident of Greensboro, Ryan has deep roots in the neighborhood and an even deeper love for the sport of golf. This month, Stroll Sedgefield is proud to feature Ryan as our Adult Athlete of the Month, shining a light on his journey both on and off the course.
From Neighborhood Kid to Golf Champ
Ryan moved to Sedgefield at age 10 and has been a part of the community ever since. While many of his fondest memories are of casual golf cart rides to visit family and friends, it’s on the greens where he truly found his calling. He picked up his first golf club at age 12, and the sport quickly became a lifelong passion. "Golf teaches you life lessons," Ryan says. "I try to apply those lessons every day, and I’m grateful for the friendships I’ve made along the way."

A Career in Golf, and a Memorable Victory
Ryan's golf journey has seen many milestones, including a professional stint from 2004 to 2008, during which he played in over 70 pro events. He now focuses on local and club tournaments, but his competitive spirit remains strong. One of his most memorable moments? A thrilling victory at the SCC Club Championship, where he finished the final round with a hole-in-one followed by two birdies. "That was pretty cool," Ryan recalls with a smile.

A Family Affair
Golf isn’t just Ryan’s passion—it runs in the family. His father, Steve Sharpe, is not only an avid golfer but also Ryan’s go-to swing instructor and mental coach. Now, Ryan’s two sons, Jack and Vance, are beginning to take an interest in golf, fishing, and hunting—pastimes that the family enjoys together. And while Rebecca may not always participate in every adventure, she’s always there to support. "She’s always down to tag along or hold the fort down when I catch a wild hair to go fishing or play golf," Ryan says, clearly grateful for her partnership.

Lessons From the Green
For anyone thinking about picking up the sport, Ryan offers one simple piece of advice: "Stay patient. You’re going to hit a lot more bad shots than good ones. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Just move on to the next shot and celebrate the good ones."

When Ryan isn’t on the golf course, you’ll find him cheering on his son’s travel soccer team or enjoying the great outdoors—whether hunting or fishing. One thing’s for sure: Ryan Sharpe’s dedication to his sport, his family, and his community makes him an athlete worth celebrating.
