In March, Stroll Sedgefield had the privilege of sharing the remarkable history of Ayrshire, the beloved four generation family estate has stood as a Sedgefield landmark for nearly a century. Built in 1935, Ayrshire is more than just a home—it is a testament to timeless craftsmanship and deep community roots.

When it came time for the Ayers family to sell their cherished estate, they hoped to find new stewards who would honor its legacy. Enter Ken and Kelley Canter. Ken, recently retired from Canter Power Systems, and Kelley, recently retired from her Mental Health Counseling Practice, recognized not just the beauty of Ayrshire, but also the opportunity to preserve and revitalize an important piece of Sedgefield history.

In April, the Canters finalized their purchase of Ayrshire and, shortly after, welcomed neighbors and friends to tour the estate and learn about their exciting plans. Partnering with highly esteemed interior designer Patra Wansley and Greensboro-based architect Steven Price—known for his expertise in historic preservation—the Canters are embarking on a thoughtful restoration and renovation.

“Our goal is to preserve as much as possible while making the house livable for a modern lifestyle,” Steven shared during our visit. Plans include upgrading kitchens and bathrooms along with renovating the existing primary bedroom suite on the second floor.

True to Ayrshire’s original 1935 design and materials, exterior additions will incorporate unique materials like clinker brick, brick nogging, and Ludowici clay roof tile to ensure seamless continuity.

Among Ayrshire’s architectural gems are its Hope’s steel windows with Cotswold-style glass—some adorned with stained glass and others with the charming wavy imperfections that only time can produce. These windows will be meticulously restored to preserve their beauty and functionality.

The kitchen will retain its historic scullery while expanding to meet modern needs. Selective wall openings will improve flow without compromising the home’s structural integrity. 

Even the estate’s whimsical pigeonnaire, a European-inspired ancillary structure historically used to house pigeons, will be lovingly preserved as a nod to Ayrshire’s unique character. 

Although Ayrshire isn’t listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Canters are approaching the renovation with the reverence of a protected landmark. “Ken and Kelley have the vision and commitment to save something truly special—not just for themselves, but for the community,” Steven said.

Renovations are underway, and Stroll Sedgefield will continue to follow the Canters’ journey as they breathe new life into this Sedgefield treasure—ensuring Ayrshire’s story continues for generations to come.
