From STEM to Service
Ayaan Akbar,16, tells us about his hobbies, goals and future plans.
I’m Ayaan, and I attend STEM Early College at A&T and will be a rising junior in high school this fall, where I’ll be taking college courses on A&T's campus starting in the fall of ’24. I'll be graduating high school with an associate's degree in IT.
Activities & Volunteer Efforts
I’ve been a part of numerous clubs, sports and efforts over the years:
Coding Club
I'm learning how to code in Python and understand scripts with the help of programmers in this club.
DECA
DECA's annual competitions challenge students to apply their knowledge in various business domains through interactive events such as role-playing case studies, business simulations, and presentations, where they demonstrate their skills in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. I’m participating in this year's business competition for finance and developing fundraising ideas to boost our club’s finances in order for our team to have the ability to participate in these competitions.
HUM Foundation
I'm the founder of this nonprofit, started during COVID-19, to help people in need throughout our local community. We partner with several other organizations to create events like food drives, clothing drives, free shopping days, and fundraisers for ongoing issues, such as hosting events for Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Indus Valley Memorial Hospital.
Horseback Riding
I've been passionate about horseback riding since I was a child and started riding consistently in 2019. I'm currently in the process of finding the right horse to purchase.
Pickleball
I play for fun and competitively with friends and family. I would like to participate in local tournaments in the future.
Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital Ambassador
I organize and plan fundraiser events in Greensboro, including galas, dinners, and concerts.
Volunteer at the PDYF Garden
I volunteer at the PDYF garden affiliated with Mt. Zion Church on Huffine Mill Road., where we harvest fruits and vegetables to give away to people in need around the local community. Their main goals are to Alleviate hunger and homelessness through a variety of programs, including an emergency food pantry, resource center, and community garden.
Future Goals & Plans
I’d like to attend UPenn, Yale or Duke to major in accounting and finance. After graduating, I plan to obtain my CPA. I've always had a passion for numbers, so accounting has always intrigued me. Eventually, I'd like to start my own firm after gaining experience in the corporate world.
Eventually, I'd like to start my own firm after gaining experience in the corporate world. Once I have a stable company set up, the funds being earned from that firm will be used to create other businesses and operations that can create other sources of income for me, giving me the ability to create a balance between prioritizing my goals that are other than financial goals, like spending time with family, traveling, cars, and horseback traveling.
I love to travel to different countries and try their street food, avoiding the very tourist-heavy spots. I have a divine obsession with exotic cars, including classics, performance cars, etc. Even though I'm in high school, I still enjoy building Legos because the satisfaction of assembling and creating something that functions is very addicting for me!
