After a big life change, it can be hard to figure out what comes next—especially if you're in a new city or a new chapter of life. That’s where the Greensboro Newcomers Club steps in, offering both connection and opportunity to anyone navigating transitions.
Sedgefield resident Leslie Scher knows firsthand how valuable that support can be. Originally from the New York area, Leslie moved to Greensboro 14 years ago. After finalizing a divorce, she was looking to rebuild a sense of community and rediscover her interests. That’s when she found the Greensboro Newcomers Club.
“It’s been one delightful experience after another,” Leslie says. “I’ve met so many great people and had a chance to try things I’d never done before.”
The Greensboro Newcomers Club has been welcoming people to the area since 1954. Membership is open not only to those who have recently moved to Greensboro or the surrounding areas, but also to those who’ve experienced a major life change in the past two years—such as retirement, an empty nest, divorce, or the loss of a partner.
And it’s not just limited to Greensboro residents. With more than 200 active members, the club draws from across the Triad, including High Point, Winston-Salem, Burlington, Oak Ridge, Jamestown, Summerfield, and more.
Members can choose from over 30 interest and activity groups—from Pickleball, Bowling, and Kayaking to Book Clubs, Gardening, Qigong, and card games like Canasta, Bridge, or Mexican Train Dominos. There are also plenty of social offerings, like Gals Night Out, Cork & Fork, Mix & Mingle, and Couples Euchre.
“There’s something for everyone,” Leslie says. “I joined a bunch of different groups—activity-based ones like Kayaking and Pickleball, and food and wine groups like Friday Night Social Club and Women and Wine. It’s all just been so much fun.”
Leslie now serves as the club’s Publicity Chair and is also the Group Leader for Arts & Entertainment, which coordinates outings to local theater, symphonies, and other cultural events.
Throughout the year, the club hosts a variety of special events and gatherings, including a Holiday Party and a Spring Party, plus monthly Mix & Mingles and Cork & Forks (both for couples) and programs featuring engaging guest speakers.
The membership year runs from July 1 through June 30. Dues are $35 for new members joining from July through December and $20 for those joining from January through June.
“Joining the club gave me a sense of belonging at a time when I really needed it,” Leslie says. “It’s such a welcoming, supportive, and fun group—I can’t recommend it enough.”
