Cooper Keeps Watch

The Harris family's loyal rescue may not be much of a cuddler, but he's always exactly where he wants to be—keeping an eye on his family and the world outside the window.

For Jason and Jenny Harris, life is centered on family. Most of their five children may be grown and beginning lives of their own, but one family member still makes it his mission to keep watch over everyone who comes and goes.
Cooper, a 12-year-old Beagle and Jack Russell mix (at least, that's the family's best guess!), joined the Harris family as a puppy after they adopted him from a rescue. Another family had previously adopted Cooper before returning him after a few days, giving the Harrises the opportunity to welcome him into the loving home he deserves.
While many dogs are obsessed with squeaky toys or tennis balls, Cooper has different priorities. He's happiest stationed at a favorite chair or sofa with his head comfortably resting as he watches the world outside. Each bird, squirrel, owl, fox, deer, and groundhog instantly captures his full attention.
"He doesn't really play with toys," Jason says. "He's completely dialed into whatever wildlife happens to wander by."
One of Cooper's most impressive talents is saying, "I love you," a trick that never fails to bring smiles.
Although he's happiest close to his people, Cooper isn't much for cuddling. Instead, he prefers simply being about an arm's length away, quietly sharing whatever room the family is in.
He's also learned to graciously adapt whenever the family's "granddogs" come to visit, making room for the growing canine extended family.
In a household built around togetherness, Cooper fits right in.
"He's just our buddy," Jason says.
Sometimes that's exactly what a family needs—a loyal friend keeping watch from the window, always ready to welcome everyone home.
