Meet Izzy, a six-year-old female Labradoodle whose sweet personality and goofy antics have made her an unforgettable part of our family.
Izzy came to us as a “Silver Spoon” rescue from Diane, her previous mom, who became too ill to care for her. She arrived with the name Isabelle, and we spent a couple of weeks considering whether to rename her. Eventually, we settled on Izzy, and somehow, it just fit.
One of Izzy’s most endearing qualities is that she seemingly loves everyone. She considers herself the official greeter of anyone within eye or sniffing distance. If someone is sitting on a neighbor’s front porch, there’s a good chance Izzy will decide that person needs to be greeted and may even drag me along to make sure it happens. She has never met a stranger she didn’t like.
She also has a few wonderfully quirky talents. Every night, she is ready for her teeth brushing, jumping up on the bed and patiently waiting for her turn. She is especially fond of poultry-flavored toothpaste, which apparently makes dental hygiene much more exciting. And Izzy has another talent that we wish she didn’t have: she can detect approaching weather long before our phones issue an alert. Unfortunately, she is terrified of thunder, fireworks, and airshows, so her weather forecasting comes with a considerable amount of anxiety.
At home, Izzy is incredibly loving and affectionate while giving you absolutely no privacy. She is remarkably intuitive about our words and emotions, although you have to be careful about what words you use around her. Never say “walk” unless you are prepared to walk immediately. She also has an interesting relationship with our cats. Izzy is convinced they love her. When they hiss at her, she apparently interprets that as a sign of affection. We’re still working on that particular misunderstanding.
She is also wonderfully cooperative. She patiently allows us to trim her nails, brush her teeth, and trim her coat without so much as a flinch. And while I love and am incredibly proud of my two adult children, I have to confess that I have many more photographs of Izzy than I do of either of them. That’s crazy love for Iz!
Izzy gave us quite an introduction on her very first day. She ran to the front door, opened it, and took off. Completely shocked, I chased after her and eventually had to tackle her in a neighbor’s yard a few doors down. Fortunately, she has settled into a much more civilized routine since then.
One of our favorite ongoing adventures involves Izzy and one of our cats. The two have a peculiar relationship: they regularly sniff each other and peacefully cohabitate in the yard. But our late-night walks can suddenly turn into a full-blown cat and dog chase. The cat will race across our path, Izzy will go absolutely crazy trying to catch her, and the whole scene becomes quite dramatic. This may happen several times during the same walk. Eventually, the zaniness subsides, and the three of us often end up walking side by side as we make our way back up the driveway, as if nothing happened.
Like any beloved family member, Izzy is spoiled. She is an absolute bacon hound. The moment bacon hits the pan, she appears at your side, ready for her share. She gets a few bits, although her regular diet includes plenty of vegetables. She also has a special relationship with our neighbor, Uncle Dan, and whenever he begins his walk with his dog Finn, Izzy is ready to beg for some of his carrots.
At night, Izzy sometimes sleeps with us for a while, but despite all the comforts available to her, she ultimately prefers the cold tile floor. She gets at least three good walks every day and seems especially proud of herself when she gets to wear her raincoat.
More than anything, Izzy has brought an incredible amount of love, laughter, and personality into our home. She has a way of making herself part of every moment, whether she’s greeting a stranger, interpreting a cat’s hiss as an invitation to play, predicting a thunderstorm, waiting patiently for her toothbrush, or simply following us around with that unmistakable Izzy expression.
She is silly, loving, intuitive, occasionally zany, and completely adored. We can’t imagine our home without her.
