One Family's Story of Freedom, Service & Home - The Liverani Family
As Shearwater joins the nation in celebrating 250 years of independence this July, one local family's journey reminds us what that freedom is all about.
This Fourth of July marks a milestone 250 years since America declared its independence - a celebration of freedom, opportunity, and the pursuit of a better life. It’s a theme that resonates deeply right here in our own neighborhood, where two years ago, Michael and Lauren packed up their lives in New York and moved their family south in search of exactly that.
“Freedom and a better life for our family and children,” is how they describe what brought them to Shearwater. “New York wasn’t providing us what we needed. We always dreamed of living in Florida.” Today, their daughters Gia (14) and Danica (11) are thriving - Gia is heading into her freshman year at Beachside High School, and Danica is starting 6th grade at Trout Creek Academy. Both girls make the honor roll.
New York Roots
Michael and Lauren’s love story actually has roots that go back further than they realized. The two grew up with overlapping family circles on Long Island but had never crossed paths - until Lauren’s cousin drove her out to make the introduction. “We actually knew a lot of each other’s family but never knew each other,” they recall. “The rest is history.”
Lauren went on to attend St. John’s University, while Michael studied at Nassau Community College before beginning a career that would come to define much of the family’s story - one rooted in service to others.
A Legacy of Service
A life of service has always been at the heart of Michael's story. He dedicated his career to the FDNY, beginning as a firefighter in Queens before earning the rank of Lieutenant and serving in the South Bronx. He also spent 25 years as a volunteer firefighter in East Meadow, Long Island, and answered the call to help in the aftermath of September 11th. His commitment to protecting and serving others reflects the very spirit of sacrifice and community that America's 250th birthday celebrates.
Now retired, Michael continues to honor that legacy each year by volunteering at the Tunnel to Towers fundraiser and golf outing every November, an organization built on remembering the sacrifices made by first responders like him.
Lauren’s career has stayed close to her New York roots as well - she works remotely as a payroll manager for eight pediatric dentistry offices still based in New York - while finding time for one of her true passions: interior design.
Family, Faith & Fun
Beyond school and honor roll achievements, Gia and Danica keep busy as members of the Shearwater Sharks swim team. Danica also plays volleyball and loves cooking, while Gia loves music, having fun, and her Eleven22 youth group. Michael brings his own talents to the table with a knack for carpentry, and Lauren tries to put her interior design eye to use around the house whenever she can.
No family introduction would be complete without mentioning Sonny, their Bernedoodle, described as loving, playful, and “half human’’ - simply “the best.” And through it all, the family says their faith is at the center of everything, making Jesus “a very special part” of their lives. While they don’t get to see extended family as often as they used to, they’ve built a close circle of friends in Shearwater they now celebrate holidays and traditions with.
Loving Life in Shearwater
Ask this family about their favorite spots and the list comes quickly: golf cart rides and walks around the neighborhood, coffee runs to Kinder Kafe, and trips to Porpoise Point at Vilano Beach, where dolphin and manatee sightings make the drive out feel like part of the adventure. Downtown St. Augustine is another favorite, especially Saint.
They make it a point to join in on neighborhood events whenever they can - golf cart parades included - and say what they love most about Shearwater is the sense of community: getting to know neighbors, lending a hand when needed, and celebrating the people who make the neighborhood special.
A Cherished Memory
One memory stands above the rest. Shortly after moving in, their pool was finally finished - and on Lauren’s birthday, the only gift she’d asked for, the whole family held hands and jumped in together, despite the water being a chilly 50 degrees. “She was so happy to finally be ‘home,’” they remember.
When it’s time to unwind, you might catch them cheering on the Miami Dolphins and the New York Yankees - even making the trip to Tampa to watch the Yankees play. They try to take one or two family trips a year, with Turks and Caicos, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Mexico, and Orlando all among their favorites so far.
This Independence Day, as our neighborhood and our nation mark 250 years of freedom, this family’s journey - from New York to a new home, from service to sacrifice, from a leap of faith to a leap into the pool - is a fitting reminder of what the celebration is all about: freedom, family, and the pursuit of a life well-lived. Happy 250th, America - and welcome home, neighbors!
