Tom the Somm Spotlights Hundred Acre Winery

A legendary name behind some of the most sought-after bottles in California

Hundred Acre Winery — now that’s a cult Napa legend worth writing about. Founded by Jayson Woodbridge and his wife Helen in 2000, the winery has earned more than twenty perfect 100-point scores from critics. A former investment banker, Woodbridge creates wines that are not just pure luxury, but also incredibly powerful — some of the best I’ve tasted recently.

While he’s known for ultra-premium Napa cult wines, he has also produced accessible, value-driven labels under $20, such as Layer Cake and Cherry Pie. To me, Hundred Acre is really three wineries: the flagship Hundred Acre in St. Helena (“Fortunate Son”), a Cabernet-driven powerhouse; and Summer Dreams in Healdsburg, Sonoma County, producing Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir.

Summer Dreams Chardonnay 2023 “The Sun Also Rises” — Sonoma Coast
This is a fantastic Chardonnay. A wine-geek friend told me, “If Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault had a baby in California, this would be it.” I couldn’t agree more. This isn’t your typical over-oaked California fruit bomb — it’s almost electric. There’s undeniable energy here: crisp yet fully textured, creamy with vibrant acidity.  Sonoma Coast at its best. — $100

Fortunate Son “The Dreamer” Cabernet 2021 — Napa Valley
The label quotes Mae West: “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.” That sentiment fits perfectly. This Cabernet is simply seductive. It washed over me like a velvet wave — fresh, fragrant, plush, and polished. I love it. — $100

Hundred Acre “Few and Far Between” Cabernet 2019 — Napa Valley
Deep garnet in color and intensely concentrated, this wine delivers layers of grilled meat, cassis, black fruits, and a long, structured finish. It defines deliciousness. A 100-point wine — though admittedly out of my price range at $750 per bottle.

Note: DC Country Club is hosting a Hundred Acre wine dinner on Tuesday, April 7th at 6 p.m. Members: $225 | Guests: $250.
