Sommelier Tom Kaufman's Picks for Valentine's Day

"A well chosen bottle, good company, and a little thought can turn any evening into something memorable."

Okay Silverleaf & DC Ranchers!

February moves fast in Silverleaf and DC Ranch. Between the Phoenix Open (I still call
it that), Super Bowl parties, and a steady stream of visitors, it is easy for the month to
fill up before you realize Valentine’s Day is right around the corner.

Working in hospitality has taught me that the best moments do not have to be
complicated. They just need a little intention. When it comes to Valentine’s Day, a
great bottle of wine is one of the easiest ways to slow down, connect, and make
someone feel special. Think of these as my first round picks. These are the bottles I
trust when the moment matters.

Los Milics Ita’s Rosé:  Pink is the color of love, and rosé is always a good place to start. This bottle is
especially meaningful to me. Before becoming one of Arizona’s most respected Vintners, Pavle Milic worked at Rancho Pinot, my first restaurant. Seeing his journey come full circle makes this wine an easy choice. It is dry and silky, with notes of fresh strawberry and a touch of spice. Chill it well, pour it on the patio, and let the night unfold. It is local, thoughtful, and effortless.

Château Calon Ségur Bordeaux:  When I want a red for Valentine’s Day, this is an easy choice. It is classic and smooth, with layers of plum, dark cherry, and cedar. The heart on the label says enough on
its own, and the wine inside always delivers. It is perfect for a steak dinner or a quiet night in.

Billecart Salmon 1818 Champagne:  Every great evening deserves a celebratory bottle. This Champagne is elegant without feeling over the top. It has fine bubbles and notes of brioche and crisp red apple. I like opening it either before dinner or at the end of the night to mark the moment.

Martinelli Pinot Noir 2022 – Russian River Valley:  I love this Pinot, and all my Pinot-loving friends feel the same way. It is pure pleasure in a glass. The word I always use to describe it is charming. Velvety and rich, with no hard edges, it’s the kind of wine that feels effortless yet deeply satisfying. If you love Russian River Pinot the way I do,  his is your baby. The Martinelli family has been making wine in Sonoma County for five generations, and it shows. They are the real deal—thoughtful, consistent, and deeply rooted in their land. It’s also a wonderful winery to visit and support. If you fly into the Santa Rosa airport, you can practically see it from there.

February may be busy, but Valentine’s Day is worth slowing down for. A well chosen bottle, good company, and a little thought can turn any evening into something memorable.
