Aaron J. McAdams
Aaron J. McAdams
Branch: U.S. Army / South Carolina Army National Guard
Rank: Warrant Officer 1 (WO1)
Years of Service: 5 years, with a commitment for approximately 12 more
Aaron McAdams knew early on that he wanted to serve his country while also pursuing his education. During his junior year of high school, he enrolled in the Army's Split Option Program, allowing him to attend Basic Training at just 17 years old during the summer between his junior and senior years. The experience gave him a head start on his military career and helped confirm that serving was the path he wanted to pursue long-term.
Throughout his career, Aaron has drilled in Easley, South Carolina, and deployed to Syria in support of Operation Inherent Resolve as well as Kuwait during the 12-Day War. He previously served as an AN/TWQ-1 Avenger Team Chief (Air Defender) and is now preparing for an exciting new chapter as an AH-64E Apache pilot.
One of his favorite memories from the military was participating in a live-fire exercise where his team successfully shot down drones. Looking back, however, the accomplishment he is most proud of is being selected to attend Army Flight School and become a pilot.
When asked about the biggest lesson he's learned through military service, Aaron doesn't hesitate.
"Patience—both in the short term and the long term." To Aaron, serving the country means being willing to sacrifice time, comfort, and even personal health on behalf of those back home. Although he doesn't yet have a family of his own, he recognizes that his military service has required his immediate family to endure long periods apart while he served in hostile environments.
He also hopes younger generations understand that every service member's path is different. "Everyone has their own reason for joining, and every career is different. Some may serve two years, others forty. Some jobs are harder than others, but everyone chose to put on the uniform and serve something bigger than themselves."
Today, Aaron is preparing to begin U.S. Army Flight School at Fort Rucker, Alabama, where he will spend the next two years training. After graduation, he'll join the 1-151st Attack/Reconnaissance Battalion in Columbia, South Carolina, flying the Apache attack helicopter.
Outside of the military, Aaron enjoys flight simulators, woodworking, and collecting vinyl records. His girlfriend is currently attending college in North Carolina, and after his military career he hopes to continue serving his community through youth programs or education.
Aaron says the military has shaped him by introducing him to people from every background, exposing him to different cultures around the world, and teaching him how to lead in many different situations. He also hopes to continue serving during times of crisis, such as hurricanes and winter storms.
His favorite place he's visited during his military career is Erbil, Iraq.
When asked about the best military story he can share, one memory immediately came to mind:
"I was outside early one morning in Kuwait talking on the phone when I looked toward the northern horizon and saw about 15 to 20 medium-range ballistic missiles."
It's a moment he says he'll never forget—and a reminder of the realities of military service that many people never experience.
