If the Gym Scares You, Read This First!
Starting exercise after years away can feel incredibly intimidating—especially the thought of walking into a gym where everyone seems fit, you don’t feel like you belong, and you have no idea where to start. For many, that fear alone is enough to stay glued to the couch.
But when your doctor tells you your health is declining and that you need to start moving to avoid serious complications, it can be the wake-up call you need.
Annette had been battling poor health for more than 20 years. “Nothing worked. Losing weight was like chiseling cement,” she said. Her A1C was 8.9%, her liver enzymes were dangerously high, and she needed an ultrasound to assess potential damage. She struggled with poor bone density, especially in her hips, and her blood glucose levels were alarming—223 in the morning and up to 340 at bedtime. Her vision had even begun to decline. After a serious conversation with her doctor, she knew something had to change. She didn’t want to start insulin, knowing how difficult it can be to come off.
Encouraged by her husband, Annette decided to try Tranzform Fitness in Grand Haven. “I was nervous and scared. I almost quit 10 times before walking in the door. But I thought, no—I owe it to myself to do this.” She signed up for an eight-week challenge that included nutrition guidance, coaching, and built-in accountability.
She began attending bootcamp-style workouts through the “Fit for Life” 55+ program, combining strength training and cardio intervals. Just as important as the workouts themselves was the coaching—ensuring she moved safely and built strength with confidence.
On the nutrition side, Annette followed a macro-based plan that actually had her eating more—focusing on adequate protein and balanced meals with healthy vegetables. She felt fuller throughout the day, which helped eliminate her usual late-night snacking.
What kept her going wasn’t just the structure—it was the support. With consistent accountability from her coach and additional one-on-one guidance from the general manager, she never felt alone in the process. “The coaches, their attention, and their motivation are what set Tranzform apart—they’re phenomenal,” she said.
While she did lose weight, the scale wasn’t the most important victory. Her A1C dropped by an incredible 2% in just eight weeks. At her next appointment, her doctor of over 40 years, was stunned. Three months later, by maintaining her new habits, she brought her A1C down even further—to 6.1%. Her blood sugar levels stabilized closer to 100 both morning and night. “My goal is to get to 5.8% and eventually come off my diabetes medication, which I’ve been on for 30 years,” she said.
Beyond the numbers, Annette gained something even more powerful—energy. Once exhausted, sedentary, and struggling with sleep, she now gets 7–8 hours of quality rest each night and wakes up ready for the day. She has the energy to stay active at home and even surprised her family by playing with her grandkids instead of watching from the sidelines.
