Love in Action
A Community of Care Transforming Lives in Northwest Ottawa County
Since 1983, Love in Action (LIA) has served as the heartbeat of compassion for
Northwest Ottawa County. What began as a collective vision among the churches of the
Tri-Cities has blossomed into a multi-faceted organization dedicated to a singular,
powerful mission: transforming lives by empowering people to thrive.
Today, LIA is more than just a social service agency; it is a Community of Care; that serves nearly 10,000 neighbors annually. By addressing the immediate crises of poverty while simultaneously building long-term pathways to stability, LIA ensures that no one in the Grand Haven, Spring Lake, or Ferrysburg area must face their hardest days alone.
What sets Love in Action apart is its commitment to integrated care. Recognizing that poverty is rarely just about a lack of money, LIA provides a wide array of services under
one umbrella always seeking to create relationships, education and opportunities that
truly empower. This "one-stop-shop" model includes:
Education: The Community Co-op provides a membership-based community in
which local families learn and grow in community with classes on nutrition,
cooking and financial management among others.
Food: Through its ten pantries, food trucks, the Community Co-op and Backpack
Blessings, LIA ensures that thousands of families and school children have
access to nutritious meals.
Healthcare: The LIA Free Health and Dental Center provides quality care to
those without insurance.
Housing and Shelter: From emergency shelter at Hope House and Harbor Hall
to long-term support for those facing extreme housing burdens, LIA works tirelessly to ensure Tri-Cities neighbors have safe places to call home.
Connect Two: LIA’s student mentoring program partners local volunteers with
over 75 students in ten Tri-Cities schools.
Stores: LIA Stores, one on the main corner in Spring Lake and another on Robbins Road in Grand Haven, recycle thousands of donated items to provide funding for LIA programs.
Recently, Love in Action launched a new distribution center called the Storehouse at
323 N Ferry St. This expanded facility serves as the food and donation processing
center, allowing LIA to scale its operations to meet rising community needs.
All of the work at LIA is fueled by an army of volunteers—over 400 in a given week!
With a ratio of ten volunteers for every one staff member, LIA is a movement of local people seeking to make a difference. Volunteers—ranging from local church congregants to middle school Honor Society students to retirees—dedicate their time to
processing food, teaching life skills classes, mentoring students and providing
specialized advisory services.
LIA works to remain nimble, responding to challenges like interruptions in funding and
rising housing costs with new programming and innovative partnerships. In 2024, over
80 local households received help with rent or utilities thanks to ten local church partners working together through LIA to serve those having trouble due to the housing
challenge.
Love in Action proves that when 40+ churches, local businesses, and thousands of
individuals unite, they don't just provide a services—they provide compassion and a way forward!
