Honoring Our Heroes: Mary Young's 23-Year Journey in the U.S. Air Force

Sterling on the Lake resident Mary Young has proudly called the neighborhood home for the past seven years, bringing with her a lifetime of service and dedication to her country. Mary served in the U.S. Air Force for 23 years, with a career marked by numerous awards, accolades, and incredible experiences.

Mary's decision to enlist in the Air Force was driven by a desire to access a college education and a sense of adventure. "The military was my stepping stone for a college education," Mary recalls. "My widowed mother couldn't afford to send six children to college, and I also wanted to travel to places I had never seen before. I knew I could in the military."

Over her distinguished career, Mary received numerous awards, including three Meritorious Service Medals, a Joint Service Commendation Medal, three Joint Service Achievement Medals, and multiple Air Force Commendation and Achievement Medals. She was recognized as Airman of the Year, Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) of the Year, and Senior NCO for the Year at various locations during 14 of her 23 years of service. Mary was also a command nominee for the prestigious USAF 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year award.

Mary's military journey took her to diverse locations across the globe, including California, Nebraska, Georgia, Washington, D.C., South Korea, England, and Belgium. Reflecting on her favorite experiences, she fondly remembers working in England. "I loved working in intelligence in England more than anywhere else," she shares. However, she also found great fulfillment in her assignment in Nebraska, where her team worked on satellite telemetry for the U.S. "Although I hated the weather, I loved my assignment in Nebraska."

Mary continues to give back to the veteran community as a former chaplain of American Legion Post 328 and by volunteering to help veterans obtain VA benefits and services. Her dedication to service remains steadfast, a trait she attributes to her time in the Air Force.

When asked what advice she would give to young people considering military service, Mary says, "The U.S. Air Force will give you an opportunity to find out who you really are and what you truly believe. It will give you a different worldview than your local backyard and community but also teach you how that community fits into that worldview." She emphasizes the importance of teamwork and values, lessons that have stayed with her long after retirement.

Mary's service instilled in her a deep love for her country and a strong commitment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution. "I continue to hold true faith to the oath I took when I first joined and after each re-enlistment. My service has taught me to be a better 'me,' and I strive to serve others whenever and wherever I can."

We are proud to honor Mary Young's remarkable military career and her ongoing contributions to the veteran community. Her story serves as an inspiration to us all. Thank you for your service, Mary!
