Flying Forward, Continuing a Legacy

Kyle Westman

Some people chase adventure; others are born into it. Growing up with a father who was a Marine aviator and one of the original test pilots for the V-22 Osprey, it was almost inevitable that Kyle Westman would find his way into the cockpit. That legacy of flight and service led him to spend 11 years on active duty in the United States Marine Corps, where he proudly served as a pilot flying the MV-22B Osprey.

His time in uniform took him around the world, from the deserts of Iraq and Syria to the rugged terrain of Somalia, Yemen, and Kenya. One of his most memorable missions earned him the Single Mission Air Medal for heroism during a complex medical evacuation in Somalia, a moment that showcased not just skill, but courage under pressure. In 2021, he was also honored with the Marine Corps Association I MEF Leadership Award, recognizing his commitment to excellence and leadership within his unit.

While combat missions shaped much of his career, one experience stands out for an entirely different reason. During a training flight in Alaska, his group of three aircraft made an emergency landing in a remote village of just 60 people. What could have been a stressful setback turned into an unforgettable encounter with the kindness and resilience of a small community. Before departing, the pilots filled a plane with fresh produce from Anchorage and returned to deliver it to the villagers, a small act of gratitude for an experience that left a lasting impression.

After completing his service, Kyle and his wife, Agustina, made their home in the neighborhood about a year ago with their two children, Camilla (7) and Nicolas (4). Life now looks a little different, more playgrounds and family dinners than flight briefings, but the sense of purpose remains. He continues to give back through his support of The Wingman Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting the families of fallen air warriors.

These days, when he’s not spending time with his family, you’ll likely find him flying for fun or lifting weights, two passions that he enjoys. His advice to anyone considering military service is simple but meaningful: “Remember to have fun and enjoy your time with your friends.”

From the skies above combat zones to quiet days spent with family, Kyle’s journey is a reminder that adventure doesn’t end when the uniform comes off.
