Kris Tamplin Shares his Personal and Professional Growth as a U.S. Marine
For Kris Tamplin, the decision to join the United States Marine Corps was more than just a career choice—it was a path to adventure, honor, and self-discipline. Kris has lived in our neighborhood for the past five years, but his journey began long before he settled here.
Why the Marine Corps?
Kris was drawn to the military for several reasons: the chance to travel, earn educational benefits, and, most importantly, to claim the distinguished title of "United States Marine"—a title that, he believes, only a select few can truly hold.
"My motivation to join was to experience the world and to take advantage of the educational benefits offered. But most of all, it was about earning the title of United States Marine. It's a title only we can claim," Kris shares.
A Marine's Journey
Kris served for four years, during which he earned numerous distinctions and qualifications, including a Combat Action Ribbon, an Overseas Duty Ribbon, and Expert Rifleman and Expert Pistol qualifications. His role as a heavy machine gunner in the infantry gave him experience in two different military occupational skills, 0331 and 8152.
"By the age of 20, I had already visited nine countries outside of the U.S., including living in communist Cuba," he says.
His time in the service also provided him with opportunities to grow personally and professionally, as he quickly rose through the ranks.
Favorite Experience
Though Kris has traveled widely and seen much of the world, his favorite experience remains his time at Boot Camp at MCRD Paris Island, South Carolina. For many, this would be a grueling and challenging period, but Kris sees it as an essential milestone that shaped his character and pride.
"My favorite experience was Boot Camp at MCRD Paris Island. It was the beginning of becoming part of something greater than yourself, something that would stay with me forever," he reflects.
And of all the places he visited during his service, the island of Seychelles stands out as his favorite location. A tropical paradise with pristine beaches, Seychelles offered a stark contrast to the military challenges he faced.
Advice for the Next Generation
Kris encourages young people considering military service to approach it with an open mind and a heart ready to serve. He believes that the experiences gained in the military will benefit them throughout their entire lives.
"My advice would be to go into it with an open mind and an attitude of service. The experiences you gain will stay with you forever, setting you apart from the rest. It will shape your future endeavors in ways you can’t yet imagine," he says.
Gratitude and Reflection
Kris is deeply appreciative of the ongoing support for veterans, both past and present. As a community, we are fortunate to have individuals like Kris among us, who have sacrificed for our freedom and continue to contribute to the fabric of our neighborhood.
"I want to express my gratitude to those who support veterans, past, present, and future. And thank you for spotlighting us in this publication. It means a lot," Kris concludes.
We are honored to share Kris’s story and proud to call him a neighbor. His journey, dedication, and perspective remind us all of the importance of service, sacrifice, and the value of the title "United States Marine." Thank you, Kris, for your service and for being an integral part of our community.
