Walt Morrissette: A U.S. Army's Veteran Journey
Walt Morrissette, a proud U.S. Army veteran, has a unique story that traces back to his roots as a "military brat." Inspired by his father’s career as a B-52 Bomber Technician in the Air Force, Walt joined Army ROTC while attending the University of Alabama. For him, the Army represented not only an opportunity to serve but also a way to "See the World."
Walt's military service spanned five years, during which he was promoted from Second Lieutenant to Captain. His journey took him across the globe, with four years spent stationed in Germany and his final year at Fort Riley, Kansas, with the 1st Infantry Division, commonly known as the Big Red One. These years of service were marked by distinction, as Walt earned both the Army Commendation Medal and the Overseas Service Medal.
Among his many cherished memories, two experiences stand out. One was stepping through a hole in the Berlin Wall after President Reagan’s famous declaration to "Tear Down This Wall." That moment became a powerful symbol of freedom and hope for Walt. Another favorite experience was covering the Army World Boxing Championships in San Diego, which he calls his "personal Mecca." Walt has returned to San Diego many times since, considering it his favorite place on Earth. His time stationed at Fort Riley also sparked a lifelong love of Kansas State Football—except, of course, when they face off against his beloved Crimson Tide!
Walt comes from a proud military family. His father’s service in the Air Force influenced not only his career path but also that of his uncle, who served as a nurse in the Air Force. Reflecting on his own journey, Walt often wonders if he might have retired from the Air Force had he followed in their exact footsteps.
These days, Walt continues to support fellow veterans. He actively contributes to the Wounded Warriors project by participating in sports memorabilia auctions at LA Fitness locations in Sugar Hill and Cumming. His dedication to veterans and their causes remains a key part of his life.
For young people considering military service, Walt offers sound advice. He encourages STEM students to explore the service academies like the Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, or West Point, highlighting the excellent education, debt-free graduation, and job security awaiting academy graduates. Even for those who don’t pursue a full career in the military, the experience provides a solid foundation for the future.
Walt’s time in the Army shaped more than just his career—it instilled a lasting sense of work ethic and teamwork. These values have been central to his life ever since. Though he’s not active on social media, Walt stays connected to the community, especially through his life partner, Jane Drake, who is known as Sterling's Silver Seamstress and can often be found active on Facebook.
Walt says he still gets goosebumps whenever veterans are asked to stand at public events. For him, the recognition of service is not just a moment of pride—it’s a reminder of the lifelong camaraderie and lessons the military has given him.
Thank you for your service, Walt!
