A Backyard Retreat that Brings People Together
When Christina Olson and her family began planning their backyard, they knew they wanted more than a pool. Their goal was to create an outdoor space that felt like a luxury resort while still functioning as the everyday backdrop for family life. With four active boys and a large extended family, the design needed to accommodate everything from quiet evenings to busy weekends filled with relatives and friends.
Family gatherings have always played a significant role in Christina's life. Growing up as one of eight siblings, she became accustomed to homes filled with people, conversations, and shared meals. That experience influenced every decision throughout the project. The backyard was intentionally designed with multiple gathering areas so people could comfortably enjoy different activities at the same time. Some might spend the afternoon swimming, while others watch a game beneath the pavilion, relax around the fire pit, or enjoy dinner on the covered patio. Every feature was selected to balance appearance with everyday use.
Bringing that vision to life required a team of local professionals. Christina credits Tranquility Pools with designing and building the resort-style backyard that became the centerpiece of the project. Tulsa Patioscapes created the fire pit, which has become one of the family's favorite places to gather throughout the year.
Today, each area of the backyard serves a purpose while contributing to a cohesive design. The resort-style pool provides hours of entertainment, while the rain curtain pavilion and covered outdoor living space offer comfortable places to relax. The fire pit, overlooking the pond, gives family and guests another place to spend time together long after the sun goes down. Together, the different spaces create an environment that feels like a getaway without leaving home.
The backyard is rarely quiet. With four boys, someone is almost always in the pool during the summer. Afternoons are filled with swimming, basketball, volleyball, and shooting hoops while riding down the pool slide. Evenings often include grilling dinner, watching football games or movies outdoors, and finishing the night around the fire pit with s'mores. Friends and relatives frequently join in, making the space just as welcoming for guests as it is for the Olson family.
Looking back, Christina says the greatest success of the project isn't found in any single feature. It's the way the space is used. Whether hosting her large extended family, welcoming friends for an evening outside, or simply watching her boys enjoy another day together, the backyard has become the setting for countless everyday moments. More than an outdoor living area, it is a place where memories continue to be made, making it one of the most meaningful investments the family has made in their home.
