Court Vision, Championship Goals
From backyard hoops and one-on-one battles with his brother to becoming a top-ranked player in Illinois, Stonebridge's Cameron Smith continues to elevate his game one practice at a time.
For Stonebridge athlete Cameron Smith, basketball has never been just a sport—it has been a passion for as long as he can remember. Now recognized as one of Illinois’ top young basketball players, Cameron continues to build on years of hard work, dedication, and a love for the game that began when he was just 5 years old.
“I only play one sport, basketball,” Cameron says. “I’ve been playing since I was 5.” His introduction to the game came naturally. Cameron spent countless hours watching his older brother, Dominic (19), compete and quickly became fascinated with basketball himself. “My older brother played, and I loved being at his games and just shooting the ball whenever I could,” he says. “Seeing all the NBA players playing and being successful really got me started.”
Today, Cameron plays both point guard and shooting guard, although his goal is to continue developing as a point guard as his skills advance. His commitment to improvement is evident in the amount of time he spends training, practicing, and competing each week. According to his parents, Courtney and Chaz, Cameron spends more than 15 hours a week on the basketball court between games and training sessions. That dedication has helped him earn one of his proudest accomplishments to date: being ranked among the top 10 basketball players in Illinois for his age group.
While the recognition is exciting, Cameron is quick to credit the people who have helped him along the way. “My family always pushes me to be the best I can be and always supports me,” he says. Among those family members, his biggest role model is his older brother Dominic. “He has always pushed me to be the best I can be,” Cameron says. “We always used to play one-on-one, which helped me understand the game more and gain experience.”
His family, which includes sister Lexi (17), describes Cameron as relentless when pursuing something he wants. Whether it’s basketball, a favorite meal, or a new pair of shoes, they say he approaches everything with determination. They also admire his strong work ethic and quiet confidence—qualities that have helped him excel both on and off the court.
What Cameron enjoys most about basketball is its intensity and unpredictability. “The thrill of the game is super fun,” he says. “Basketball goes back and forth, and you never really know what’s going to happen.” When he’s not in the gym or on the court, Cameron enjoys spending time with family and friends, going to the movies, and traveling with his family.
For younger athletes interested in basketball, Cameron’s advice is simple: just get started. “Basketball is one of the easiest sports to play,” he says. “Get a ball, put on shoes, and find a park. You can shoot around, work on dribbling, and do it all by yourself. Then find a team and learn how to be a good teammate.” Looking ahead, Cameron has big goals. He hopes to play varsity basketball, win a state championship, and earn a college scholarship. Beyond that, like many young athletes who dream big, he has his sights set on the ultimate stage. “After that,” he says, “the NBA would be the dream next step.”
With his talent, determination, and commitment to continuous improvement, Cameron is already proving that those dreams are well worth pursuing.
