For the Love of Edinburgh

From childhood memories to family traditions and a love story that continues to grow, Abby Duncan reflects on how growing up in Edinburgh has shaped her life, her relationships, and the heart of home.

For the past 13 years, Edinburgh has been the backdrop to so many chapters of my life: Family dinners, holiday traditions, swimming at the pool, tennis matches, golf days at Bear’s Best, and long walks with my mom. It’s the place where I’ve grown up, built routines I love, and shared countless moments with friends and family. With my wedding coming up this June, I’ve found myself reflecting on just how much this neighborhood has shaped me. Edinburgh hasn’t just been the place I lived, but it’s been a huge part of who I’ve become and the memories I’ll carry with me into this next chapter.

A Family Woven Into the Neighborhood
If you’ve ever been near the tennis courts, you've probably seen some combination of my parents or my brothers out there. We have been a huge tennis family my entire life! My mom and dad jumped straight into Edinburgh tennis when we moved, and it is one of my mom’s favorite parts of her day (Shout out to the ProseccHo’s!).

My brothers, Ryan and Whit, grew up playing competitive tennis, and whenever they come home for visits, they have to fit in a tennis match. It has become a family tradition to go up and watch the two of them battle it out! It is safe to say my family gets pretty competitive.
Mom and I have our own little tradition of taking long walks through the neighborhood and onto the trails at Settles Bridge Park. Those walks have held everything from wedding-planning talk to career discussions to the kind of venting that only moms seem to understand. Some of my favorite heart-to-hearts have happened during my “walk and talks” with her.

My dad, Derry, has served as president of the HOA for many years. If you know him, you know he takes community leadership seriously. He’s hands-on, he’s present, and he’s the first to volunteer whenever something needs doing. My parents have not only enjoyed living in Edinburgh but also the community that comes with it.

Growing Up in the Water, Growing Forward in Love
From a young age, I have always loved being in the pool! So much so that I would smell like chlorine 24/7, and I had to beg mom and dad to let me do year-round swimming after many years of summer league, even a few as an Edinburgh Marlin! After swimming my whole life, I continued through all four years at North Gwinnett High School, graduating in 2016. Fun fact, we had our senior banquet at the Bears Best Clubhouse! From there, I headed to Georgia Southern University on a swim scholarship before transferring to UGA (Go Dawgs!), where I met Kyle!

We met during my last semester, totally unaware that the world was about to shut down. When COVID hit, everything paused. School was moved online, I moved back home to Edinburgh, and our relationship suddenly turned into FaceTimes and long phone calls.
We eventually graduated from UGA together, and Athens will always hold a soft spot in our hearts. This June will mark six years of us being together! Six years of family gatherings for holidays and Georgia games, traveling the world, building our careers, moving to Sandy Springs, and getting a new dachshund puppy… Mochi!

Kyle is a very creative artist and also the caddie master at Peachtree Golf Club. His love for golf is contagious, and he always finds a way to fit in a round at Bears Best when visiting my parents. As for me, I work in marketing at Clarion Events and also continue to pour myself into my fashion and bridal world with my page, The Couture Companion. Six-plus years of content creation, wedding editorial work, and collaborating with designers and brands all over the country. And now, I get to experience the bridal world from the bride’s perspective.

A Scottish Chapter (Yes, the Real One)
If you know the Duncans, you know we live to travel! Thanks to my dad being a Delta pilot for 29 years, we’ve pretty much been spoiled by travel my whole life, and it's become a huge part of who I am today. This past summer, we took an epic family trip to Scotland…yes, the actual Edinburgh! I had the chance to shoot bridal content at the iconic Emma Roy boutique, and Kyle was living his childhood dream playing the Old Course at St. Andrews. We spent time learning about ourfamily history, especially the Duncan and Campbell heritage woven into our last names. It felt like this magical overlap of family history, fashion, golf, and adventure all rolled into one.

Traveling has now become Kyle and my love language. In our six years, we’ve visited seven countries—Japan, Mexico, France, Monaco, Costa Rica, and more. Every trip adds a new little piece to our relationship.

Celebrating Love, Edinburgh-Style
When wedding planning began, it made perfect sense to bring the excitement home to Edinburgh.

Back in July, I hosted a “Bridesmaids & Bellinis” party at my parents’ house! We had a lovely day of champagne, colorful outfits, and wedding talk. Their backyard was the perfect spot to gather, and we even ended the day at the neighborhood pool!

Since we’re both passionate UGA grads, our engagement party in October had to be centered around the Bulldogs! Our theme of 'Bulldogs, Brews & I Do’s' hosted at the newly renovated clubhouse, which was perfect. Celebrating our upcoming marriage with all our family, friends, and neighbors who have watched our relationship grow made the whole evening feel incredibly homey, joyful, and full of love.

We will be getting married on June 13, 2026, at the Tate House, and we are so excited! The sweetest part is recognizing how much our story, our families, and our community have been woven into the actual reality of getting us here.

Why This Neighborhood Matters
When I think about Edinburgh, I think about all the versions of my life that unfolded here. Edinburgh has been the constant of my growing-up years, my family’s traditions, and my love story with Kyle. It’s the neighborhood that holds our memories, celebrations, and milestones.
As Kyle and I look toward our future, I’m grateful for the place I call home. A neighborhood full of heart. A community full of connection. A home full of love.

Here’s to Edinburgh, where our story continues to grow because I will always be the daughter who still loves eating dinner at her parents' table and taking long walks with mom around the neighborhood!
