Breaking Barriers and Building Confidence

Edinburgh teen Tyler Smith earns his first-degree black belt after three years of discipline, perseverance, and hard work

At just 13 years old, Edinburgh resident Tyler Smith has already accomplished something few martial artists achieve: earning his first-degree black belt after exactly three years of training. What began as a way to get stronger, learn self-defense skills, and make new friends quickly became a journey that shaped Tyler’s confidence, discipline, and perseverance both inside and outside the dojo.

Now a 7th grader, Tyler says karate has taught him lessons that extend far beyond the sport itself. “Karate has taught me to never give up even when things are tough,” he shared. “Earning my black belt is the hardest thing I have ever done.”

That achievement required an incredible level of dedication and consistency. Tyler committed himself to a demanding routine over the course of three years, balancing school, friendships, and intense training. He explained that once he developed a steady routine, maintaining that balance became much easier. His commitment and discipline played a major role in helping him reach his goal.

What keeps Tyler motivated most is the sense of community he has found through karate. “My training progress and my friends,” he said. “My parents and I have made so many great friends that it feels like a family. We have so much fun and push each other to do our best.”

The final black belt test itself was an eight-hour challenge designed to push students both mentally and physically. Tyler began the day with a three-mile run completed within 33 minutes, followed by 1,000 kicks, 1,000 punches, mountain climbers, burpees, push-ups, and a two-minute plank. After lunch, he demonstrated self-defense techniques against four black belts at once with his eyes closed, completed both combat stick sparring and hand-to-hand sparring, and finished by breaking a wooden board with both a kick and a strike on the first attempt.

“You can’t just test for your black belt,” Tyler explained. “It takes three years to condition your body for that level of endurance and strength. It builds over time. Earning your black belt takes tremendous strength, discipline, focus, and massive athletic endurance.”

His instructor, Mr. Neal from Elevate Martial Arts, says Tyler’s growth over the past three years has been remarkable.

“Tyler is an incredibly hard-working and respectful student,” Mr. Neal shared. “His confidence, fitness, skill, and perseverance have all increased during his journey to Black Belt. Combined with his humility and friendliness, those qualities make him an awesome teammate and a great leader.”

One of Tyler’s favorite memories was receiving his black belt after completing the grueling test. More importantly, karate has given him confidence and life lessons he plans to carry forward.

“It has taught me that the hardest things in life are the most rewarding if you honor your commitment and are willing to do the hard work it takes to see your vision through,” he said.

Tyler looks forward to earning his 2nd degree black belt in the future and hopes to help younger students as they begin their own martial arts journeys. For Tyler, karate has become far more than a sport. It has taught him resilience, leadership, and the value of staying committed to a goal no matter how difficult the journey may be.
