Meet Miss Bea, The Newest Member of the Glass Family
My name is Beatrix Glass, and I live on Harbury Lane, but I haven’t always lived there. A few short months ago, I was alone in a kennel at the Henry County Animal Shelter. I had lost hope. I had quit eating and resigned myself to the back of my assigned cage.
Thankfully, someone saw me and saw a good girl who needed a chance. Hero Dog Rescue picked me up and took me on my “freedom ride.” As part of my intake process, I went to Little River Animal Hospital in Milton, and I met another person who saw my potential, our neighbor (and that hotty Noble Jones’s mom), Dr. Kristen McFarland. Dr. Kristen was impressed with how calm and sweet I was at the vet. She checked me out, told me I was a healthy 2-year-old girl (I’ll never tell), and we took some selfies.
Dr. Kristen knew that Mom was heartbroken over the untimely loss of my Aunt Jude to cancer in September. Mom had told Dr. Kristen that the best way to honor Jude was to help another dog find a home. Dr. Kristen sent those selfies we took at her veterinary hospital to my mom, Kim. She included a text that said, “I found your new dog.”
I stayed with a foster family for 10 days, and had a little work done. Now I have a blue tattoo on my belly! My foster mom delivered me to Edinburgh in early November.
My mom took me to meet Dr. Ashley at Lanier Animal Hospital, and I had a genetics test. I have ancestors from 17 different breeds! My most prominent breeds are the Redbone Coonhound, American Pit Bull Terrier, and Labrador Retriever. Aunt Jude and I share ancestors; that’s how I know we are related. Mom says I am stubborn like a Coon Hound and needy like a Pit Bull, but I’m not much of a retriever.
I enjoy being outside in my yard. My neighbors, the Binkleys, like to give me tennis and lacrosse balls. I bark at the people passing by, but I just want to be friends. When I go out in the dark, I wear my “disco collar” because my brindle fur is really good camouflage. One morning, I tried to make friends with a coyote who was hunting rabbits in the junipers across the street, but he ran away from me. I must have been too “Bea-licious" for him.
I have taught my people to open the door when I scratch it, and to give me “bickies” when I stare at them really hard. I enjoy traveling in the car, especially to the mountains. For fun, I steal shoes and socks, play with my toys, and keep people’s seats warm when they get up from the sofa. I enjoy wrestling with my big brothers Liam and Ewan, especially when they are stinky (which is often). I am looking forward to Mom’s retirement, because my office job with Dad is pretty dull. I’m not the best employee, something about being insubordinate when Dad tells me to come in the house, and “stealing time.”
Beatrix is my given name, and it means “beloved traveler.” Mom calls me Miss Bea because she knows I have been through a lot. I’ve come a long way from a shelter in Henry County to my posh life in the ‘Burgh. I am thankful for the people who saw my potential and took a chance on me. I hope anyone else who has a heart that needs healing or has love to share will choose hope and adopt a unique dog like me.
