Suncoast Humane Society

Strengthening the Human-Animal Bond

Founded in 1971, Suncoast Humane Society is the area’s go-to animal welfare organization; a private, no-kill, non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming homeless animals in our region. For 50+ years, Suncoast Humane Society has helped animals and their people, assisting more than 50,000 of them to live lives that are safer, healthier and filled with love. We also established rescue partnerships with 24 counties in Florida and extended that reach to Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and Puerto Rico.

Giving new hope to the helpless takes work and determination, so we constantly adapt to new situations and find new ways to help animals while also empowering the community. Together, we help animals walk into bright new futures, whether they are puppies or kittens, young or old, small or large. Because we love them all.

Our Mission: Because pets need people and people need pets, Suncoast Humane Society provides shelter to the most vulnerable animals, affordable prevention services to the community, and ongoing support for pets and the people who love them. As such, at the Suncoast Humane Society, every program, service, and partnership is built around a single purpose: strengthening the human–animal bond. To achieve this mission, we operate through three interdependent pillars: Sheltering, Prevention, and Community Outreach. Together, these pillars create a holistic, compassionate approach that supports pets, their people, and the community at large.

1. Sheltering: Providing Safe Have and Enrichment
Our sheltering philosophy extends far beyond temporary housing. Suncoast Humane Society offers innovative, enrichment-driven programs designed to ensure each animal receives the care, socialization, and emotional support they need.
Key sheltering initiatives include:
 Open adoptions and innovative matchmaking programs that focus on finding the right fit for both pets and families
 Dedicated maternity suites to keep mothers and litters safe and comfortable
 “Doggie Day Out” and “Weekend Warriors” outings, giving dogs the chance to relax and socialize outside the shelter;
 Short- and long-term foster options
 Play yards and even a swimming pool, providing exercise and stimulation
 Communal living spaces that reduce stress and encourage natural interaction
 Enrichment-focused care, ensuring every animal’s physical and emotional needs are met.
These efforts collectively create a nurturing environment where animals thrive, and adopters connect with their perfect companions.

2. Prevention: Keeping Pets Healthy and at Home
A strong human–animal bond begins with accessible, affordable veterinary care. Our prevention programs help families keep their pets healthy, safe, and out of the shelter system.
Prevention services include:
 High-quality, low-cost veterinary care to make wellness accessible for all
 Vaccinations and spay/neuter services to reduce disease and overpopulation
 Microchipping, increasing the chances of lost pets returning home
 Heartworm, flea, and tick prevention
 Educational pet health lectures that empower families to make informed decisions.
By addressing health needs before they become crises, we help pets stay with the families who love them.

3. Community Outreach: Connecting People and Pets
Community Outreach allows Suncoast Humane Society to extend its impact beyond the shelter walls. These programs strengthen relationships, support community members, and promote humane education throughout the region.
Our outreach efforts include:
 Pet therapy, bringing comfort and companionship to people of all ages
 Animal Ambassadors, sharing lessons about empathy and responsible care
 Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (PASS), a resource-focused program helping families overcome challenges that might otherwise lead to surrender
 Humane education programs for schools, youth groups, and community organizations
 Distributive learning opportunities and internships, offering hands-on training for future animal-care professionals.
These programs build a more compassionate community- one that values animals and
the people who care for them.

A Unified Mission
At the heart of all three pillars is a central goal: strengthening the human–animal bond. By providing compassionate sheltering, proactive prevention, and meaningful community engagement, Suncoast Humane Society works every day to improve the lives of pets and the people who love them.
