Finding Purpose in Healing and Community: My Journey as a Psychotherapist and Cavalier King Charles Enthusiast
Knightly & Reign with their friend
Centered in the heart of Newport Beach, my life is a blend of two profound passions—helping individuals build stronger identities through my private psychotherapy practice and fostering a loving, supportive community for Cavalier King Charles Spaniel owners. These two aspects of my life may seem worlds apart, but they share a common thread: connection, healing, and support.
Nassif Psychotherapy: A Functional Approach to Mental Health.
As a psychologist, my private practice, Nassif Psychotherapy (NassifPsychotherapy.com), is built around the idea that mental health is deeply connected to lifestyle, nutrition, and personal identity. Over the past year, I have shifted towards a more functional psychology approach, which means I strive to uncover the root causes of mental health struggles rather than simply managing symptoms with traditional methods.
I completed my Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Southern California (USC) and hold two bachelor's degrees in Psychology and Creative Writing from Pepperdine University. Coming up on nine years in private practice, my journey began in substance abuse treatment centers, where I spent the first five years of my career working in and directing several facilities. This experience gave me considerable knowledge and expertise in trauma, substance abuse, and behavioral addictions, shaping my approach to therapy. I integrate family Systems, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Narrative Psychology, and psychodynamic Theory into my work, offering clients a comprehensive and personalized treatment approach.
Many people have been misled into believing that psychiatric medications are the only solution, but I challenge that notion. While medication has its place, it should not be the first or only approach. Often, underlying factors such as hormone imbalances, metabolic health issues, or nutritional deficiencies contribute to mental health struggles. My work includes assessing these factors through comprehensive hormone panels, analyzing how food affects mood and cognition, and identifying environmental toxins that may be disrupting mental well-being.
Another cornerstone of my practice is movement—helping clients understand how exercise plays a critical role in mental resilience. When we move our bodies, we also move our emotions, allowing for processing and healing in ways that traditional talk therapy alone cannot always achieve. My goal is to empower individuals to take control of their mental health by making informed, proactive lifestyle choices.
The Pillars of Identity: A Framework for Lasting Self-Understanding
Beyond functional psychology, another major development in my practice has been my theory on identity and attachment, which I call the Pillars of Identity. Through an 8- to 12-week structured protocol, I help clients build a solid foundation of self-awareness that enables them to navigate life’s challenges with greater confidence and resilience.
Many people define themselves through their careers, family roles, or hobbies—external factors that, while meaningful, can be taken away in an instant. When people rely too heavily on these external identities, they risk losing their sense of self when life inevitably changes. Through the pillars of Identity, I guide clients to cultivate internal foundations that cannot be shaken by external circumstances. This approach has transformed the lives of many individuals, helping them develop a sense of self that is strong, enduring, and adaptable.
Cavs & Coffee: More Than Just a Dog Meetup
Four years ago this March, I started the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel meetup group, now known as Cavs & Coffee (@cavsandcoffee on Instagram). What began as a simple way to meet other Cavalier lovers has blossomed into the largest Cavalier meetup group in Southern California. We gather monthly in different locations around Newport Beach, and our events have become a staple for local Cavalier owners.
But this group is about so much more than just getting together with our beloved dogs. The true mission is fostering connection—not just among the dogs, but among the people who love them. Many of our members have formed deep friendships, helping each other with everything from pet-sitting to emotional support during the difficult moments of saying goodbye to their furry companions.
Our group also emphasizes education on Cavalier nutrition and health. Cavaliers are prone to specific health issues, and our community is committed to learning how to give them the best possible care. From discussing the best diets to sharing tips on exercise and preventive health, Cavs & Coffee is a hub of knowledge and encouragement for Cavalier owners.
Bridging Two Worlds: The Power of Connection and Healing
At first glance, my work in psychotherapy and my role in the Cavalier community might seem unrelated, but they are deeply intertwined. Both endeavors focus on the importance of connection—whether it’s a person discovering their own identity or a dog owner finding a sense of belonging in a supportive community.
Just as I help my clients build strong internal foundations, I’ve helped create a space where Cavalier owners can support one another in meaningful ways. Healing, whether for people or pets, is best done in the company of those who understand and care.
Whether through Nassif Psychotherapy or Cavs & Coffee, my mission is to help people feel more grounded, connected, and supported in their journey—whether that journey involves personal growth, mental health, or the unconditional love of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
