Bright Mind, Big Heart: Rylann Viator Named Louisiana’s Middle School Student of the Year

From school leadership and state competitions to dance team dedication and community service, Rylann’s journey is proof that being kind, driven, and true to yourself can take you far.

Can you tell us what it means to be named Louisiana State Middle School Student of the Year?
It’s truly an honor—something I’ll never forget. To be chosen from so many amazing students across the state means the world to me and is deeply humbling. It shows that hard work, kindness, and staying true to who you are really does matter. I hope I’ve made my school, my town, and my parish proud!

What was your reaction when you heard the news?
I was honestly in shock! I couldn’t believe it at first. I’m never speechless, but I couldn’t find the words in all the excitement. I just felt incredibly excited and thankful. It’s such a huge honor, and I’m still smiling about it! Knowing that I was representing my school, my parish, and my community made it even more meaningful. I felt like I was standing there not just for me, but for everyone who has helped me along the way. I owe a lot to my administrators, teachers, dance instructors, coaches, peers, family, and my sweet friends for helping bring out the very best in me. This is an honor we all share—I couldn’t have done it without them.

What did the selection process involve? Were there any interviews, essays, or projects you had to complete?
Yes! I had to complete essays, build a portfolio that showed my academic achievements, leadership, and service, and go through interviews at the school, parish, regional, and state levels. It was a strenuous process that pushed me to reflect on everything I’ve done and taught me a lot about myself.

What do you feel helped separate you from the other nominees?
I think it was a combination of my leadership in school clubs, my dedication to community service, and how much I truly enjoy learning and helping others. I’ve always tried to be someone who leads by example and works hard, and maybe that stood out. I also feel like I carried the spirit of my school—home of the Bobcats—and my town, Erath, Louisiana, with me through the whole process. I’m proud of where I come from, and I hope that showed. We bleed, “Bobcat Blue” in our small, tight-knit community.

Do you have a favorite teacher or someone at school who inspires you?
I’ve had so many wonderful teachers who inspired me, but my mom, who was also a teacher and librarian at my school, will always be my biggest influence. She leads with heart and always encourages me to use my voice for good. She leaves her sparkle wherever she goes, and she has helped me to leave mine! I’ve also had amazing coaches and mentors who’ve helped me grow in and out of the classroom. So many of them have also inspired me along my journey.

How do you stay organized with school, activities, and everything else?
I keep a planner with me almost everywhere I go. I write down deadlines, events, and goals. Balancing everything takes discipline, but when you love what you do, it’s worth it!

What extracurricular activities are you involved in?
A lot! I’m on the nationally ranked Erath High School Extreme Dance Team, a member of Abbeville’s Dance Connection Senior Elite team, involved in 4-H, Jr. Beta, Student Council, and serve as the freshman class president for the Class of 2029. I also enjoy participating in community service projects and leadership events.

Are you part of any leadership or volunteer programs?
Yes! I’ve taken on leadership roles in student council, my church, 4-H, and Jr. Beta Club, led community service efforts, and now, as freshman class president, I’m excited to take on even more responsibility to make a difference in my high school.

What motivates you to work hard and do your best?
Knowing that my hard work can open doors and help others motivates me. I want to make my community proud and set a good example for younger students. Plus, I love challenging myself to be better every day and in everything I set out to do.

Who has encouraged you the most on your journey?
My parents, especially my mom. They’ve always believed in me and taught me to stay humble and kind. I also have an incredible tribe—my family, administrators, teachers, mentors, and friends who cheer me on constantly. I love my tribe!

What’s next for you? Did you have big plans for the summer? Are you ready/excited for high school?
I’m definitely excited for high school! My summer was packed—I attended 4-H University in Baton Rouge, Jr. Beta Nationals in Orlando, and danced with my teams. I also helped plan events for the Class of 2029. Even with all the busyness, I can’t wait for my high school years. I am excited to make memories, meet new people, join new clubs, and take on new challenges. I’m ready to grow and keep representing my parish and community with pride.

What advice would you give other kids who want to succeed in school or make a difference?
Be yourself and never be afraid to lead. It’s okay to stand out if you’re standing for something good. Set goals, stay focused, treat people with kindness, and believe in your ability to create change—even as a kid. You matter.
