A Big Easy Escape

A quick Valls family weekend proves you don’t have to go far to make meaningful memories with the people who matter most.

Travel Tales often takes us across the country, or even across the world. But sometimes, the most meaningful getaways are the ones close enough to pack a bag, hop in the car, and be back home before the week begins. For Michael and Mary Margaret Valls, a recent weekend trip to New Orleans was a reminder that a short escape can be just as refreshing as a far-off adventure.

When their daughter, Mindi, who lives in Oklahoma, planned a visit home for the weekend, the Valls family decided to make the most of the time together. Rather than staying close to home, they turned the visit into a quick family getaway, one that allowed them to unplug, reconnect, and enjoy quality time without the stress of extensive travel planning.

New Orleans proved to be the perfect backdrop for a relaxed and meaningful weekend. The group spent their days strolling the city, some places familiar, others new, but all rich with meaning. The trip brought back special memories for Michael and Mary Margaret, who enjoyed revisiting sites tied to Michael’s years playing football at Tulane University. New Orleans is also the city where Michael proposed, making the experience even more sentimental. After 53 years of marriage, the couple often finds themselves reminiscing about those college days, times that felt stress-free, safe, and full of joy in the Crescent City.

The family also made time to enjoy the rhythm of New Orleans life. They visited the St. Louis Cathedral and wandered through the French Market, soaking in the sights, sounds, and easy energy of the city. Meals were a highlight as well, starting mornings with breakfast at Croissant D’Or Patisserie on Ursulines Avenue, enjoying seafood at SeaWitch on St. Charles Avenue, and dining at Adolfo’s on Frenchmen Street.

Evenings were filled with music and movement, true to New Orleans style. The group danced and listened to live music at Cafe Negril on Frenchmen Street, embracing the relaxed, joyful atmosphere that makes the city feel alive long after the sun goes down.

What made this trip especially special wasn’t just where they went, but how easy it was. With no flights to catch or long itineraries to juggle, the family was able to focus on what mattered most: being present with one another. The quick drive home at the end of the weekend only added to the appeal, making the entire experience feel like a true reset rather than a tiring excursion.

For Michael and Mary Margaret, this weekend getaway was a reminder that travel doesn’t always have to be grand or far away to be meaningful. Sometimes, the best memories are made just a few hours from home, and sometimes the best trips are rooted in shared history, familiar places, and the people who matter most.
