A Day Well Spent in Franklin

Toni Young turned a simple suggestion into an unforgettable ladies' day out in her charming hometown.

Some of the best trips start with a casual conversation. For Toni Young, it was mentioning her connection to Franklin, Louisiana, that sparked the idea. When the ladies of her Sugar Mill Pond card group heard about the charming shops and rich history tucked into that small town just down the road, they were sold. Before long, Toni had made a call to her dear friend Tonya Stiel, co-owner of Gather on Main, and she planned the ultimate ladies’ day out.

The group of eight set out ready to explore, and Tonya had everything waiting for them. Their first stop was Gather on Main, where the ladies were welcomed with a toast of Blumond wine from Italy and a spread of delicious hors d'oeuvres. "She's just a dynamic person," Toni says of Tonya. "I told her we were coming, and she had the whole day planned for us." From there, the group wandered through the charming boutiques and gift shops along the downtown area, including The French Door, a beautifully curated shop where Toni once had the pleasure of working, and T-Shirts and Treasures, another local favorite full of finds.

Lunch brought the group to The Forest Restaurant, and it did not disappoint. Owner Al Kuhlman, who is in his 80s and still actively running the place, has created something truly special in Franklin. The ladies feasted on a seafood spread that had everyone talking: shrimp cocktail featuring some of the biggest shrimp anyone had ever seen, a mouthwatering seafood gumbo, and a main course of golden fried shrimp alongside shrimp etouffee. "There is nothing on that menu that is not done to perfection," Toni says. "It is such a little jewel in Franklin." The food reportedly received a round of applause from the entire table.

The afternoon took a sweet and unexpected turn when Tonya opened the doors of her family's home for dessert. The home, listed on the historic register, has been kept in the family for generations and continues to serve as the backdrop for their most cherished gatherings. The ladies enjoyed a stunning pecan cake, handcrafted by Tina Martin Carline, a newly crowned first-place winner at the Harvest Moon Fest cake competition. Not a crumb was left.

For Toni, who grew up in Franklin, the day carried a little something extra. "Seeing my little hometown impress these ladies made me so happy," she shares. "Franklin's downtown area is just doing great right now, and it felt good to bring some business there." The group came home with full hearts, shopping bags in hand, and a unanimous desire to go back.

If you are looking for a perfect day trip, Toni has one recommendation: call Tonya Stiel. "She knows groups all over the state, and she is ready for you," Toni says. "She will have the whole day planned, and it will be incredible." From boutique shopping and wine to a legendary restaurant and a slice of local history, Franklin delivers a day that is genuinely hard to beat.
