Très Mignon

One-year-old Chihuahua Mignon shares the story of finding her human, perfecting the art of fetch, and continuing a cherished legacy of canine companionship in Kacey Loring’s life.

Bonjour! My name is Mignon, and as you can probably tell by looking at me, the name fits. My mom, Kacey, wanted something French, and I am, after all, très mignon.

Our story began when Mom learned about a woman in Texas who had two female Chihuahuas for sale. The moment she saw me, she fell in love. She admits she paid far more than she intended, but what can I say? I was irresistible.

Mom had been missing the companionship of a dog since losing her 15-year-old Chihuahua to kidney disease a year and a half earlier. She wanted another little friend with whom she could share her life and love. I knew I had an important role to fill, and I have taken my position as constant companion very seriously.

Of course, every good companion needs a few special skills. Mine include shaking hands for treats and keeping time better than most clocks. I know exactly when my meals should arrive, and if the service is running behind, I am not afraid to provide a reminder. When dinner is on its way, I spin around like a tiny ballerina.

My greatest talent, however, is fetch, especially when my favorite toy, Squirrel, is involved. If Mom throws Squirrel 100 times, I will bring him back 100 times. I believe commitment is important.

I am equally happy cuddling and napping with Mom, but I can be ready for an adventure at a moment’s notice. A walk in the park? Absolutely. A ride to the coffee shop? Say no more.

Morning visits to Huya Coffeeshop are part of a tradition established by the dogs who came before me. I quickly learned to appreciate these outings after being introduced to the pup cup. I now consider myself an enthusiastic supporter of both tradition and whipped cream.

At home, I spend plenty of time with my sister, Minnie, my grandma’s Yorkie. We can run through the house and wrestle for hours. I also enjoy giving Grandma kisses and sitting beside her in the recliner, provided Minnie approves, of course.

Mom says she cannot choose one particular funny story about me, but she also says I make her laugh every day. Sometimes it happens while I am playing with Minnie. Other times, one of my silly expressions is enough. Apparently, I have a natural gift for keeping everyone entertained.

I am also very well cared for. On a scale from 1 to 10, Mom rates my level of spoiledness at an 11. I see no reason to dispute such an accurate assessment.

Whether we are sharing a quiet nap, visiting the coffee shop, or setting off on our next adventure, I am happiest by Mom’s side. Most of all, I am here to make sure Mom never has to feel lonely, and to remind her that there is always room in life for more love, more laughter, and one more throw of Squirrel
