A Farm with Heart: Stone’s Throw Farm Co. in Fort Worth, Texas

For Bellas residents, the name of this unique farm and store is almost literal.

Head south on 377, then swing a left on 1187 in southwest Fort Worth, Texas, and you’ll find a local farm foods store with a big mission and an even bigger heart. Stone’s Throw Farm Co., founded by Jack and Trish Stone, began not as a business but as a necessity.

When their oldest son was diagnosed with multiple food allergies, the family turned to fresh produce, clean meat,
and from-scratch cooking. Soon their backyard garden overflowed, and the Stones started sharing their bounty at local markets. In 2019, they rolled out a farm stand trailer, filling it with their own harvest plus honey, eggs, and meat from nearby growers. Just one year later, Stone’s Throw became a nonprofit, and in 2022, the family opened the doors to their brick-and-mortar store, which lies just a metaphorical stone’s throw from the Bellas.

Groceries with a Mission
While the shelves brim with Texas produce, grass-fed beef, raw milk, and jars of handmade pickles, the true heartbeat of Stone’s Throw is its mission: creating meaningful work opportunities for individuals with special needs and disabilities. “We are a blended family with three sons,” Trish explained. “Our middle son, Jackson, is autistic. Our youngest, Cru, has cystic fibrosis and type 1 diabetes. We created Stone's Throw as a place where all of our sons could contribute and belong. Post high-school support for people with special needs, especially autism, is lacking. We wanted to create a place that provides work opportunities for our son.”

Today Stone’s Throw employs 22 interns who work or volunteer in some capacity with the store. Interns help stock produce, tend the gardens, and even greet customers. “People often ask about key achievements,” Trish shared. “They’re usually social—making eye contact, shaking hands, speaking with a stranger, or even making a friend.” Although these victories may seem small, they are monumental for the interns and their families.

Foodie Philanthropy
In 2023, Stone's Throw was nominated for Fort Worth's annual Foodie Philanthropy award. To move forward the nominees had to receive the majority of public votes, and the fan base Jack and Trish had built really came through with a record amount of votes. The couple worked fervently to secure restaurant and corporate sponsors to partner with them for benefit dinners and raffle items as part of the 10th anniversary celebration Foodie Philanthropy in February of this year. Their hard work paid off as they were awarded a check for over $88,000.

Feeding Body, Soul and Spirit
In addition to its market, Stone’s Throw offers gardening and canning classes, a garden shop, laundry service, and even a small animal corral. Soon, they'll open a woodshed and bring on more barnyard pets, which will in turn provide additional work opportunities for the Stone’s Throw interns.

Jack and Trish are quick to point out they aren’t therapists or educators—they’re parents who saw a gap and dared to fill it. What started as a way to nourish their own family has blossomed into a haven where others can find nourishment for the body and soul.

For Bellas residents and other neighbors, Stone’s Throw is a place to source farm-fresh eggs, heritage pork, or raw milk. But for the families who walk through its doors, it’s a sanctuary of dignity, purpose, and belonging. Because in the end, Stone’s Throw isn’t just about food. It’s about feeding hope—one jar of jam, one garden row, and one life-changing opportunity at a time.
