Meet Lily Skabelund

Years of dedication and countless hours of training are paying off for one of The Cascades' most promising young athletes.

How Elite Gymnastics Training Shapes Young Athletes: Lily Skabelund's Journey from East Texas to WOGA
For many young gymnasts, reaching the highest levels of competition begins with thousands of hours of practice, unwavering family support, and a passion for the sport. Twelve-year-old Lily Skabelund is proving that dedication can lead to remarkable success.

A resident of The Cascades in Tyler, Texas, Lily trains at the renowned World Olympic Gymnastics Academy (WOGA) in Plano, one of the nation's most respected gymnastics programs. WOGA has produced Olympic champions including Nastia Liukin, Gabby Douglas, and Hezly Rivera, making it one of the premier destinations for aspiring competitive gymnasts.

Training at One of America's Top Gymnastics Academies
Training at an elite gymnastics facility requires commitment far beyond the gym.
Although the Skabelund family calls The Cascades home, Lily and her mother, Dr. Amaya Skabelund, spend much of their time in Plano so Lily can maintain her demanding training schedule. Like many elite athletes, she balances homeschooling with up to six days of gymnastics training each week.

That level of dedication has helped Lily develop not only advanced gymnastics skills but also discipline, resilience, and a strong work ethic that carries into every aspect of her life.

A USA Gymnastics Region 3 Champion
Lily's hard work produced a major milestone in April when she captured the USA Gymnastics Region 3 Championship.
Region 3 is recognized as one of the most competitive gymnastics regions in the United States, making the accomplishment especially meaningful. Competing against some of the country's top young athletes, Lily demonstrated the consistency, confidence, and determination required to perform at an elite level.

For any young gymnast, winning a regional championship is a significant achievement and an important step in a competitive gymnastics career.

Where Lily's Gymnastics Journey Began
Like many athletes, Lily's story started unexpectedly.
At just 18 months old, she attended a birthday party at a local gymnastics facility. According to her mother, it didn't take long to recognize that gymnastics was more than a passing interest.
"She hasn't left the uneven bars since," Dr. Skabelund said.
That early introduction grew into a passion that continues to shape Lily's daily life and long-term goals.

More Than Medals
While gymnastics occupies much of her schedule, Lily also enjoys listening to K-pop, spending time with friends, and cheering on fellow athletes.
Her story is a reminder that success in youth sports is about more than championships. Behind every accomplishment are years of perseverance, countless hours of practice, and the encouragement of family members who help make those dreams possible.

A Young Gymnast to Watch
As Lily continues training at WOGA, she represents the determination and commitment shared by many young athletes pursuing excellence in competitive gymnastics.

With her talent, discipline, and love for the sport, she has already accomplished what many gymnasts only dream about. Her Region 3 Championship is an impressive milestone, and her journey is just getting started.

For families with children interested in competitive gymnastics, Lily's story demonstrates how passion, consistency, and the right coaching environment can create opportunities for extraordinary growth—both inside and outside the gym.
