Meet Dusti: A Golden Presence in The Colonies
Watching life unfold from his favorite front yard, Dusti brings comfort, connection, and a reminder that love often walks beside us on four legs.
In The Colonies, neighbors now recognize a familiar and comforting sight: Dusti, the cream-colored Golden Retriever, calmly observing the world from his favorite spot in the front yard of Dwayne and Melissa Simons’ home.
At eight years old, Dusti exudes a gentle presence and has a remarkable story. He first joined the Simons family in September 2017, traveling all the way from Ukraine as a birthday surprise for their youngest daughter, Kirsten. A tiny bundle of cream fur with oversized paws, he was immediately placed into her arms when he arrived home. She laughed and cried simultaneously—the kind of joy that fills a room—and from that day on, Dusti was unmistakably hers.
His name came to him naturally. With a soft coat the color of West Texas dust and sunlight, he looked weathered in the sweetest way, as if shaped by the open plains themselves. True to his name, Dusti grew into a dog who follows closely, watches quietly, and loves deeply.
Golden Retrievers are known for loyalty, but Dusti’s devotion was extraordinary. He didn’t just follow Kirsten—he was truly hers. Three years later, tragedy struck when the family lost Kirsten at age 13 in a four-wheeler accident while checking calves. Dusti was there that day with Dwayne in the pasture he loved to roam. Melissa remembers his face afterward—somber, slumped, and silent in the bed of the pickup—as if he understood that something sacred had changed forever.
Another memory remains impossible to forget. One evening, after returning home late from Lubbock, the family noticed Kirsten’s bedroom light glowing even though no one had entered the room. Dusti barked—his first bark—then slowly walked down the hallway and sat alertly at her bedroom door, ears raised, watching and listening. His cream fur caught the light as he gazed inside. In that quiet moment, the family felt they were witnessing something holy, as if Dusti still carried Kirsten with him.
Today, Dusti continues to bring warmth to everyday life. He sits, spins, lies down, and shakes hands like a perfect gentleman. He rides to work with Dwayne, walks confidently into local banks for treats, and knows the exact moment highway travel means extra snacks. Milk-Bone treats and soft plush toys are favorites—though socks remain his mischievous weakness.
Most days, however, Dusti is happiest at home, calmly watching neighbors, greeting children, and absorbing the rhythm of community life. To many, he’s the lovable dog on the porch. To the Simons family, he embodies loyalty, memory, and love—still faithfully keeping watch.
