Timeless. Sophisticated. Exquisite.

Editor’s note: After a laborious multi-year build, this 10,000 sq. ft. showstopper seamlessly fuses glass, cedar, and concrete into a triumphant architectural tour de force with a sense of permanence and grandeur. This magnificent home is considered one of the most impressive and high-quality contemporary estates ever built in Manhattan Beach, featuring panoramic ocean views from every room. Generously nestled on an extra-wide corner lot, this magnificent home boasts six bedrooms plus an additional office/nursery, nine bathrooms, home theater, game room, wine cellar, wet bar, and gym, with architecture by Laney LA.
Home is a place where memories are made, dreams are shared, and where families can find a respite from the cares and concerns of life. Jeff and Jamie Schumacher live in a magnificent 10,000 sq. ft. house with their three children, two 14-year-old twins (Christian and Scarlette) and a 6-year-old daughter, Vivienne.
“We chose to live here because we love the extra space and privacy that the Hill Section affords, along with the spectacular views,” says Jeff. Their house does not disappoint. Expect to find them on the main level, which is their favorite part of the house. “The living room and kitchen area open up to the yard and the pool, creating a wonderful, relaxing indoor-outdoor space,” explains Jeff.
A Happy Household
Originally from Minnesota, Jeff went to the University of Wisconsin, while Jamie, born in Pasadena and raised in Denver, attended Colorado State. Married for 18 years, Jamie runs her own PR firm, and Jeff is an entrepreneur heading an AI software company, NAX.
The Schumachers enjoy skiing, beach outings, and traveling together. A memorable year for the family was 2016 when they lived in London, and the children attended school there. Known for their hospitality, the family particularly loves hosting their annual Halloween party, a highlight for their kids.
An Exquisite Home
A standout feature of their home is its self-sufficiency; it operates as its own power plant with over 80 solar panels and four Tesla batteries. The home boasts 13 separate heating and cooling zones, allowing for individualized room temperatures.
“We can stay off grid for days and our cost for power is the same as a house that is one-fifth the size. The green energy is state-of-the-art,” explains Jeff. Additionally, the ceilings are notably high exceeding 10 feet, even in the basement, creating a sense of depth and spaciousness.
Described as "custom warm contemporary," the home’s architecture is defined by its scalloped concrete walls and seamless indoor-outdoor connection. Architect Anthony Laney highlights the walls' gentle undulating texture, which contrasts with the traditional perception of concrete as cold and corporate. The custom color used for the walls complements the natural cedar, adding to the home's inviting atmosphere. The motorized sliding glass doors disappear at the push of a button, further enhancing the connection between the pool deck and the great room. The mature landscape provides privacy while maximizing sun exposure, and ocean views are captured from both levels of the home.
Another exquisite feature of the home is the breathtaking views. It wasn’t easy to achieve, though. However, Laney and his team were able to elevate the front yard to take advantage of ocean views, placing the pool deck at the heart of the outdoor space. In contrast, the backyard serves as a private motor court and indoor-outdoor gym.
The Best of All Worlds
The Schumacher family’s home at 1001 1st Street has the best of all worlds. Its innovative design and sustainable living is one-of-a-kind. With breathtaking ocean views, state-of-the-art green energy solutions, and seamless indoor-outdoor spaces, this home is not just a place to live but a sanctuary that embodies timeless sophistication and exquisite detail.
