Stone Salon & Boutique: A Family Legacy of Beauty and Heart
If you ask Joanne Stonecypher what makes Stone Salon & Boutique so special, she’ll tell you it’s all about relationships. “That small-town spirit stuck with me,” Joanne shares warmly. Born in Birmingham and raised in the tiny town of Maben, Mississippi where “everyone knew each other and hospitality wasn’t just a gesture, it was a way of life” – Joanne learned early in life that beauty is more than skin deep.
“My mother, originally from Okinawa, Japan, and I shared a deep love for beauty,” Joanne says, remembering the days they attended cosmetology school together before opening their first salon in Maben. That shop quickly became more than just a place to get a haircut. “People would stop by for coffee and conversation, sometimes trading a haircut for fresh vegetables or a fishing trip,” she laughs. “My mom loved to fish, so that was always a win in her book!”
That sense of connection and care is exactly what Joanne hoped to recreate when she and her husband, Randy Stonecypher, opened Stone Salon & Boutique in The Preserve in Hoover. “I knew I wanted to bring that same welcoming, personal touch to the city,” Joanne explains. “Even though Hoover is bigger, The Preserve has a cozy, connected feel that reminds me of home.”
And just like in Maben, this salon is a true family business. Joanne and Randy have five children — David, Craig, Austin, Lesli, and Kimi — three of whom have played a role in shaping the salon into what it is today. “Both Lesli and Kimi now work alongside me as stylists,” Joanne says. “We’re proud to be a true family business!”
A Space Built on Service and Heart
At Stone Salon & Boutique, clients feel welcomed from the moment they walk in. “Our salon was built on a love for beauty, service, and community,” Joanne explains. “After years behind the chair and creating connections with clients, I was inspired to open a space that felt both luxurious and down-to-earth — a place where people feel at home the moment they walk in.”
That personal touch is what sets them apart. “The relationships we build with our clients and the multi-generational dynamic of our team make all the difference,” Joanne says. “We truly care about each person who walks through our doors.”
What You’ll Find at Stone Salon & Boutique
At Stone Salon & Boutique, guests enjoy a full range of hair services — haircuts, highlights, balayage, color — as well as beauty treatments like facial waxing and threading. But there’s more than just pampering; the boutique offers a carefully curated selection of women’s clothing, accessories, jewelry, and gifts, including the popular Susan Shaw collection.
“Clients love browsing while their color processes or while waiting on their stylist,” Joanne says. “It makes their visit feel like a treat from start to finish!”
Growing with the Community
Being part of The Preserve has been a joy. “We’ve been so fortunate to grow with this amazing community,” Joanne reflects. Even during slower times — like the pause in spa services during COVID — Joanne and her team stayed true to their welcoming spirit. “Instead of scaling back, we pivoted,” she says, “and launched our boutique. It gave clients even more reasons to enjoy their time with us.”
Words of Encouragement
Joanne’s advice to her neighbors? Make time for yourself. “No matter how busy life gets, make time for self-care — and surround yourself with people who uplift you,” she says. “Whether it’s a fresh haircut, a fun shopping find, or just a friendly conversation, little things can go a long way in making you feel like your best self.”
That’s the heart behind Stone Salon & Boutique — a place where beauty, service, and community come together every single day.
