AUGUST

TREES:
This fall is the prime planting season. The tops of trees stop growing, thus making fewer demand on the root system. Also, the ground is warm, encouraging roots to grow. Fall can be a very warm and dry month. Water newly planted trees regularly. Prune out dead or diseased wood from trees. Hold off major pruning until mid winter or even early spring.
SHRUBS:
Select healthy container grown or ball and burlap shrubs, and plant them properly in the right location in your landscape. Providing sufficient moisture will encourage rapid establishment. One of the best shrubs for the fall is the Camellia family. Good color for the fall months.
LAWNS:
If your soil has become compacted, make plans to help your lawn breathe easier this fall by aerating your lawn. Due to the dryness of the season, you will need to water some – at least once a week. Don’t retire the lawnmower - as long as the grass grows, it should be mowed.
HERBS & VEGETABLES:
The fall garden is somewhat easier than spring and summer. Because temperatures are lower – fewer insects and diseases – more rain in the middle of the fall will give better production. Good herbs for fall are parsley, rosemary, sage, and oregano. Good veggies include onions, garlic, collards, kale, sugar, snap peas, mustard, and chard.
