Sports have always been a big part of life for Junior Montes, owner of Play It Again Sports. From teenage employee to becoming a franchise owner, his passion for helping local families stay active shines through in everything they do. Stroll recently caught up with Junior to learn more about the business, the community connections behind it, and why keeping sports fun matters most.
What inspired you to get involved in the sporting goods business, and how did you end up with
Play It Again Sports?
I've had a lifelong passion for sports, both as a spectator and as an active participant. Since high school, I
have been with Play It Again Sports, progressing from part time "kid" to managerial role, and ultimately to
franchise owner.
For neighbors who haven’t visited yet, can you tell us a little about Play It Again Sports and what
makes your store unique?
We don't only carry used gear. In fact most of our gear is NEW. That being said we do buy your used
sporting goods. Every piece of used equipment that is in our store was purchased from a customer
walking into our store and selling it to us. We pay cash on the spot or you can take our credit option and
trade it in towards your next purchase. Never need an appointment just walk in. We carry most major
sports, we also service what we sell, anything from baseball mitt repairs to ice skate sharpening to golf
regripping.
What types of sports gear do you most often buy and sell, and are there certain seasons when
specific items are in high demand?
We do a lot of baseball/softball and golf, even with our cold winters those have turned into year around
sports. But we carry most major sports, we're seasonal when it comes to snow sports but they're always
in the building if someone wants a pair of skis in July.
How does the buy–sell–trade process work for families who have gently used equipment at
home?
We offer 3 options on used gear. First is consignment, you do get a bigger offer for your items but you have to be patient and wait for you items to sell. Second is a trade credit you can apply that days purchase or leave it on file toward a purchase down the road. Third is cash yes cash on the spot! Whole process takes just a few minutes so you never need to make an appointment and you won't have to make a second trip back.
Why is buying and selling used sports equipment such a great option for families with growing
kids?
I have active kids in local sports myself and I know first hand how fast they grow and leave great
equipment behind. We have tons of equipment from someone trying a new sport for the first time to the high school kid who wants the latest and greatest bat. No one likes to over spend! Let us grow with you.
Are there any hidden gems or specialty items people are surprised to find in your store?
EVERYDAY! People are always surprised with how much equipment we have. There's a lot of baseball and
golf and with us being this far west, we see a lot of great gear.
How do you support local teams, schools, or youth sports programs in our area?
We sponsor leagues and offer discounts to teams. We try and help school's out with PTO and any gym
needs they might need. We also have a great partnership with the St. Charles Park District and
Pottawatomie Golf Course.
Tell us a little about your family.
I have lived and grown up in St. Charles since my family moved here from Mexico when I was 5. My
wife is a nurse in the area and we have 3 kids, 2 that are still active in sports (baseball, softball, tennis, and
soccer), so I have first had experience with growing kids and changing sports.
What’s your best advice for parents who are just getting their kids started in a new sport?
Win or lose we're getting ice cream! Keep it fun.
