September 2025 — Local business, National Karate & Martial Arts of Illinois has been named one of the Top 100 Small Businesses in America by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, earning national recognition for its excellence, community impact, and dedication to students.
Out of tens of thousands of applicants across the country, National Karate was selected for this prestigious honor. Owner and founder Cristian Nelson who has been a Thornwood Resident for 24 years, will travel to Washington, D.C. this October to participate in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s award ceremony and small business summit, joining other leaders from across the nation.
“This recognition is truly humbling,” said Nelson. “It reflects the hard work of our instructors, the dedication of our students, and the support of the families and communities we serve. We are proud to represent Illinois on this national stage. And it is especially sweet to receive this honor this year as we are celebrating our 30th Anniversary!”
Martial Arts: Building Champions in Life
For more than 30 years, National Karate has been committed to helping children and families grow in confidence, discipline, and respect. Martial arts training is widely recognized for its benefits, especially for kids:
- Confidence and Leadership: Students learn to believe in themselves and take on challenges.
- Focus and Discipline: Skills that carry over into school and everyday life.
- Goal Setting and Achievement: Progressing through belt ranks teaches perseverance and resilience.
- Fitness and Fun: High-energy training builds strength, coordination, and healthy habits.
Parents consistently find that martial arts offers something unique—character development alongside physical training. That combination has made National Karate one of the most trusted names in the area for decades.
Local and National Recognition
National Karate isn’t just making an impact nationally—it continues to be a hometown favorite.
