HETRA Changes Lives One Stride at a Time
At HETRA, every ride is about more than horses, it's about building confidence, independence, and hope. Guided by the motto of "changing lives one stride at a time," HETRA improves the physical and emotional well-being of children and adults of all abilities through equine-assisted services.
The organization offers a wide range of programs, including Adaptive Riding, Therapy Services, Adaptive Carriage Driving, and Equine-Facilitated Mental Health. Led by PATH Intl. certified instructors and licensed therapists, each session is thoughtfully designed to encourage emotional, cognitive, social, and physical growth through meaningful interactions with horses. HETRA also provides Life Skills programming, services for veterans and first responders, Equine-Assisted Learning, public riding opportunities, and community experiences.
The impact is remarkable. In 2025 alone, HETRA delivered 8,977 hours of programming to 3,171 participants. This isan increase of 29 percent in service hours and 65 percent more individuals served than the previous year. While those numbers are impressive, the greatest success stories are found in the confidence gained by participants and the independence they discover along the way.
Behind every lesson is a dedicated team of therapy horses and more than 400 volunteers who make each experience possible. Together, they create a welcoming environment where every participant has the opportunity to thrive.
Looking ahead, HETRA invites the community to join in two exciting fall events. The 5th Annual Boots & Bags Cornhole Tournament takes place on October 4, with opportunities to register teams, become a sponsor, or donate silent auction items. Families can also mark their calendars for the annual Stall & Treat event on October 18, featuring costumed horses, trick-or-treating, and kid-friendly activities along a festive haunted trail.
