For Simon and Kelli Hjelm, one late-night introduction at Buena Vista University turned into a lifetime of adventure. The two met through a mutual friend while they were in college, and today they've built a life centered on faith, family, sports, and making the most of every moment together.

The Hjelms have called Tiburon home for 13 years. They chose their lot because of the peaceful pond behind their home, and it has become the backdrop for many favorite family memories. During the winter months, sons Kaden and Lincoln loved lacing up their skates on the frozen pond, creating moments the family still cherishes.

Simon, originally from Iowa, graduated from Iowa State University before earning his MBA from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He has worked at Union Pacific since 2002 and now serves as a general director in network planning and operations.

Kelli grew up in Omaha, attending Millard schools before graduating from Buena Vista University with a degree in education. After teaching in both Iowa and Nebraska, she found a new calling. Today, she owns Trua Senior Living Centers, a free service that helps families navigate senior living options and find the right level of care for their loved ones. She also continues to teach dance at Nebraska Dance, something that has remained a meaningful part of her life for many years.

Their sons have certainly kept life exciting. Kaden, 23, is entering his senior year at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota, with plans to pursue physical therapy after graduation. He currently plays on the Bethel Royals Hockey Team. Before college, he attended NorthStar Christian Academy and played competitive hockey in both Alaska and Texas. 

Lincoln, 20, is preparing to begin his collegiate hockey career at UNO after spending the past two years playing in Kearney. A NorthStar Christian Academy graduate, he also spent time developing his game in Vancouver, British Columbia. While he's considering a business degree, he also dreams of someday playing professionally in Europe.

Life has revolved around hockey for years, which means family traditions often look a little different. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and even Easter have frequently been spent traveling for games or tournaments. Instead of focusing on the date, the Hjelms have learned to celebrate whenever they can all be together. When they're not at the rink, you'll likely find them on a golf course, at the beach, in Okoboji, or in Florida at a favorite vacation spot.

Their home wouldn't be complete without George and Oshie. Oshie, a Cockapoo, and George, a one-year-old Aussiedoodle, are beloved members of the family. George joined the Hjelms after Lincoln broke his wrist. Looking for a distraction, they visited some puppies, and George immediately won everyone over.

Another passion close to Kelli's heart is raising awareness for ALS in honor of her lifelong friend who introduced her and Simon, Des Moines meteorologist Jerianne, whose recent diagnosis inspired Kelli to become actively involved with ALS in the Heartland.

What the Hjelms love most about Tiburon is the sense of safety, community, and opportunity it provides. Whether enjoying the golf course and pool, taking walks with their dogs, or simply watching the next chapter unfold for their boys, they know they've found a wonderful place to call home.
