A Place to Belong: How Island Church Brings Community and Faith Together

Tucked into the heart of Tierra Verde, Island Church has become more than just a place of worship. It’s a gathering point where neighbors meet, friendships grow, and faith is explored in a way that feels genuine and approachable.
As the only church located directly in Tierra Verde, Island Church offers something uniquely local: a space where residents don’t have to go far to find connection, encouragement, and community. “We want people to feel like they can come as they are,” Jolene Bivens shared. “It’s about creating an environment that’s relaxed, authentic, and welcoming to everyone.”
Rooted in Community, Built on Purpose
Island Church’s story begins in 1992, when it was founded as The Island Chapel by longtime residents James and Dorothy Hair alongside Pastor Mike Wetzel. Early services were held at the Tierra Verde Resort, reflecting the grassroots spirit that still defines the church today. By February 2001, the congregation had grown into its current home behind TD Bank, and in 2020, Dr. Will McRaney stepped in as the church’s second pastor, continuing its mission into a new chapter.
That mission has remained steady: helping people connect with God and with each other. Through ministries like women’s groups, men’s gatherings, prayer meetups, and small “Life Groups,” Island Church provides opportunities for meaningful relationships to take root. It’s not just about Sunday mornings; it’s about building a support system that extends into everyday life.
More Than a Church: A Community Hub
Island Church plays an active role in the broader Tierra Verde community. Its facilities are regularly open for weekly exercise classes, condo association meetings, and rehearsals for the Island Bells. Throughout the year, the church helps bring neighbors together with events like:
- Easter egg hunts at the community park
- Sunrise services at Ft. De Soto Park
- A festive Trunk-or-Treat celebration in the fall
- Participation in the annual Christmas Tree Lighting
They even serve as a local polling place, another example of how deeply woven they are into the fabric of the island.
Looking Ahead: Building Bridges for the Future
Exciting developments are on the horizon. Through its “Bridge the Future” campaign, Island Church is working toward expanding its facilities to better serve the growing needs of the community. The vision is ambitious but grounded: to create a hub where people of all ages can gather for recreational, educational, spiritual, and relational activities.
Plans include enhanced spaces for children and youth programs, areas to support first responders during emergencies, and even a community coffee shop, something many residents are already buzzing about.
“We’re dreaming about a place where people naturally come together,” Jolene shared. “Not just for church, but for life.”
A Simple Invitation
At its core, Island Church is built on a simple belief: no one is meant to do life alone. “We need each other, and most importantly, we need Jesus,” Jolene emphasizes. Whether someone is deeply rooted in their faith or just beginning to explore, Island Church aims to be a safe, welcoming place to take that next step.
For Tierra Verde residents looking for connection, purpose, or simply a friendly face, Island Church offers an open door and a warm invitation to walk through it.
