Located in the Topsfield Business Park, Topsfield Bakeshop is the result of decades of dedication from owners Chris and Mary Bandereck. The couple, who met as students at Johnson & Wales University in the 1980s, turned their experience in the hospitality industry into a thriving bakery business.

Topsfield Bakeshop is best known for its whoopie pies, a product that launched their journey into New England’s dessert scene. What began as a request from a local market has grown into a multi-faceted operation, including six dessert trucks, catering services, and two retail locations—with a third on the way. The Banderecks have also established The Whoo(pie) Wagon and The Cookie Wagon, making their signature treats accessible across the region.

In 2010, the couple moved the business out of their home and into a retail space in Topsfield. Rather than relocating to Boston, they chose to stay in the town where they had raised their family. Their bakery has since expanded to a 4,000-square-foot facility, and they’ve built a loyal customer base that stretches from New Jersey to Maine. They also offer nationwide shipping, sending their baked goods to students, friends, and businesses across the country.

Like many small businesses, the bakery faced significant challenges in 2020 when events and weddings were canceled due to the pandemic. The Banderecks adapted by offering pre-orders for baked goods and meals, a move that strengthened their connection with customers and opened new opportunities for growth.

The Banderecks’ dessert trucks remain a popular feature at events, festivals, and employee appreciation gatherings throughout New England. For the past 18 years, they’ve been a fixture at the Topsfield Fair, an event they call their “home base.”

As the bakery looks to the future, they are preparing to open a new location in York, Maine. Meanwhile, their Topsfield headquarters continues to serve as a hub for both local customers and those who travel long distances to enjoy their desserts.
