Topsfield Declared a Purple Heart Town

Topsfield is proud to announce its designation as a Purple Heart Town, a tribute to veterans who have been wounded or killed in service to our country. Residents will soon notice new signs going up around town to commemorate this honor.
The Purple Heart, the nation’s oldest military award, recognizes the sacrifices of service members and their families. Originally established by George Washington on August 7, 1782, as the Badge of Military Merit, it was reintroduced in 1932 by Army Chief of Staff Douglas MacArthur under its current name and design. The medal bears Washington’s profile and honors soldiers wounded or killed in the line of duty.
Over time, the eligibility criteria for the Purple Heart have evolved, with an estimated 1.8 million medals awarded to date. This distinction not only acknowledges the bravery of our veterans but also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those in our own community.
“We are proud to honor the veterans of Topsfield who have made the ultimate sacrifice or endured wounds while serving,” said Dick Cullinan, Veterans Officer for Topsfield. “This designation is a meaningful way to show our gratitude and respect.”
