Celebrating 75 Years at Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary

From history talks and poetry walks to storytelling and a community picnic, the sanctuary is inviting neighbors to celebrate one of Topsfield's most treasured places—all with free programs this fall.

For 75 years, the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary has been a place where generations of families have hiked wooded trails, watched turtles bask in the sun, introduced children to nature, and found a quiet escape just minutes from home.
This fall, Mass Audubon is marking the sanctuary's milestone anniversary with a series of free public events that celebrate not only its natural beauty, but also the stories, history, and people who have shaped this special place since the first parcels of land were protected in 1951.
Whether you're a longtime visitor or have always meant to explore the sanctuary's nearly 2,000 acres, there's something for everyone.
The anniversary series continues throughout October and November with programs exploring Indigenous storytelling traditions, Native history of the North Shore, the sanctuary's conservation legacy, and a guided walk highlighting 75 years of ecological stewardship.
All programs are free and open to the public, though advance registration is required.
Whether you come to learn, reflect, celebrate, or simply spend an afternoon outdoors, this anniversary series offers a chance to experience one of Topsfield's most cherished natural places in a new way.
