Is there anything unique about the home's history? / What is the home's story?
The original 1950s part of the home was designed by architect John Callender, who also designed the "House of Ideas." This house was considered the quintessential "yardstick for good living" and was featured as the cover story in House and Garden Magazine in July 1951. In 1998, a significant expansion of the home was undertaken, which added to its Frank Lloyd Wright feel with a cantilevered roof and clerestory windows (a row of windows well above eye level—stretches all the way back to temples in ancient Egypt).
What drew you to the house in the first place?
We were drawn to the house because of its California vibe, Frank Lloyd Wright feel (Guggenheim Museum is one of Frank Lloyd Wright's most famous works) and park-like setting with numerous ornamental plantings.
Do you have a favorite space/room in the house?
Our favorite space is the Great Room, which boasts very large windows and a high ceiling, bringing the outdoors inside.
Tell us about the design inspiration. Did you decorate it yourself or use a decorator? If the latter, who? Did you do it all at once or over time? What was your design inspiration? If you could do it all again, what would you do differently?
We embarked on a major renovation when we purchased the home, with our architect also serving as the interior designer. Over the years, we have continually updated the home, participating in choosing all the elements. If given the chance to do it all again, we wouldn't change a thing.
What do you like about living in Upper Brookville?
We appreciate the privacy, the expansive nearly 4-acre property, and the magnificent natural beauty of the area.
