Sometimes the right dog comes along when you least expect it. It was love at first sight for Isabel Lay-Meireles and her four-legged friend Piper.

While sitting on the beach at her sister’s condo, scrolling through TikTok Live, she spotted a tiny Yorkie-poo with a big personality. “I had lost my dog about 15 months before,” Isabel shares. “I wasn’t really looking.” That’s when she found the dog of her dreams. “I just fell in love,” she says.

Now nearly two years old, Piper has grown into a spirited little dog with a personality all her own.

“If you meet her, she’ll greet you at the door barking,” Isabel laughs. “She definitely lets you know she’s there.” And while she may be small, Piper has very clear preferences, especially when it comes to people.

“She is very attracted to men,” Isabel says with a smile. “The gardener, the UPS driver, the pool guy… she loves them all.”

Piper is affectionate, but on her own terms.

“She’s not a big cuddler,” Isabel explains. “Her time is her time.”

That independent streak shows up in her daily routine, too. She has her own crate and playpen setup and prefers her own space at night. “She kept me up all night when I tried to have her sleep with me,” Isabel says. “That didn’t last long.”

Car rides can be a bit of a mixed bag.

“She gets a little anxious at first,” Isabel says. “But once she settles in, she’s okay. You just have to get through that moment.”

What Piper loves most, though, is getting out and about. “She loves to be outside,” Isabel says. “We’re always running into neighbors.” In fact, Piper has become something of a social connector in their Venetian Isles neighborhood, helping spark conversations and friendly introductions.

“She’s just special,” Isabel says. And sometimes, that’s all it takes to make a pet unforgettable. Piper is living the life of luxury with Isabel and her family. This beloved dog wouldn’t have it any other way!
