The vision for Ross Brothers was established over 12 years ago while Derek was having issues with contractors that were being used to build out office space where the company headquarters is presently located. People were not showing up or doing what they said they were going to do. He was in a bind. There was a need to get into the new space so there would be a place to put the team of 35 people.

Time was running out.

An electrician had promised him that he would have the office fully staffed on the following Monday in order to finish the job. Nobody showed up on Monday. Finally, two electricians showed up on Friday of that week. Derek spoke to them and reminded them that their boss had promised a full staff and asked them if they would work on Saturday so the job could get finished. The response was, “I’m sorry brother. I don’t work Saturday.”

He was outraged and knew that there had to be a better way. He concluded then that he was never going to go through something like this again. He also realized that if he was going through this, then a lot of other people must be going through this as well.

“I decided at that point that I was going to treat people the way that I wanted to be treated and build a business that made promises and kept them,” Derek says. “One of the things the company is most proud of is the fact that well over 1,400 projects have been completed. We don’t have one client saying Ross Brothers didn’t complete their job or keep their word as promised.”

The team plans everything out for each project.

At Ross Brothers, it all starts with a rendering.

“We design the home in 3D way before we swing a hammer or give a finalized budget. The reason why this is important is that people cannot visualize from a 2D or from a blueprint. When it is in 3D, it has a whole different aspect,” Derek explained.

The rendering process allows the team to marinate and think the project through. The team can easily spend upwards of 300 hours in the design phase.

When the rendering is finished, the client comes in and they love it. They are then able to take it, think about it and make changes. They come back, and everyone, including the designers, will work on it until they get it right. At this point, the team knows that they are getting the client close to something that is going to be exactly what they want.

“They have been involved with it from A to Z. This is not a Ross Brothers home. This is their home – which we happened to accomplish their dream,” Derek acknowledges.

When it is just right, Ross Brothers will provide an estimate for the finished product.

“The big benefit that we do which is different than everybody else is most designers don’t know what things cost, and most contractors don’t know how to design. We have married the two,” Derek stated. Because we do the contracting and the designing, we’re able to get a 

budget and stay within budget as opposed to someone who will design something with no price tag attached and will be over budget.”

On top of the superb customer service, the biggest difference between Ross Brothers and everybody else is the attention to detail. When Ross Brothers lays out a bathroom, for example, they actually sit there and ponder every single pattern that they could possibly lay out and will think about where everything is going to go.

The future involves spec homes and developing those along with semi-custom homes. Software is currently being worked on which will make the client’s experience much easier.

“You are going to be able to put on a set of goggles, touch a wall and have 200 choices on that wall. You will pick the materials in real time and design your whole house with every finish, wall, floors, cabinet colors, everything and be able to push a button and get a price instantaneously.”
