Harley Found Her Home

If anyone was wondering what became of the large German Shepherd dog roaming the neighborhood last Fall, let me introduce you to Harley!

Last fall, people posted sightings of Harley for almost a week. Eventually someone outside our neighborhood was kind enough to care for her temporarily and posted that she was in desperate need of a new home. Harley's previous family posted online that they were moving and needed to rehome the dog. Apparently they were unable to find anyone and ultimately abandoned her in our neighborhood.

Reading about the dog sightings and knowing that our daughter Abby’s boyfriend (Joe) wanted a German Shepherd, they jumped on the opportunity and rescued her. At first contact they realized what a nice, friendly dog she is. Harley was eager to jump into the car and basically collapsed on the seat on the ride home.

She was taken to a vet and was found to have blisters on her paws from the very hot pavement she encountered as she roamed aimlessly throughout the streets. Otherwise, she did not seem to be malnourished or harmed in any way. Her course of treatment was antibiotics and pain pills for a few days.

Befitting a dog her size (very large!), she has an immense appetite, but seems to instinctively know to save food for later. Maybe foraging for herself taught her this. She has buried food in our backyard and has become very familiar with our house as well as the university apartment she shares with Joe, her new owner and his roommates and pets. Our backyard offers her the extra space she needs to run around and have fun though. Abby and Joe say visiting our house on weekends with their pets is like going to Disneyland!

Many may know Abby, as she has become a reliable pet sitter in our neighborhood over the last 2 years. She treats every pet with much love and affection, as does her boyfriend Joe. Thankfully, Harley has found a great place to call home!
